Kevin Kiley (I-CA) and Richard Pan will face off in California’s 6th Congressional District this November after the AP confirmed Pan will advance from the jungle primary. With 92% of votes counted,Kiley had 45,006 votes (24.5%), Pan 42,587 (23.2%), and Republican Michael Stansfield 36,961 (20.1%), narrowly avoiding a scenario that could have kept Kiley from being matched against another Democrat. Under the jungle primary system, the top two vote-getters move to the Nov. 3 runoff if no one wins a majority.

Kiley, a two-term congressman from the 3rd District, became an self-reliant for this race after announcing in March that he would run in the 6th District where he lives rather of as a Republican in the redrawn 3rd.He said he’s driven by constituent concerns rather than party leadership and has appealed to a mix of Democrats, Republicans, and independents. He has also been a sharp critic of California’s mid-decade redistricting, arguing Democrats redrew the map to weaken GOP incumbents, and he’s faulted house leadership for not advancing limits on partisan redistricting.

Pan, a pediatrician and former state lawmaker, is nationally associated with helping lead California’s effort to remove religious exemptions tied to school vaccine requirements.
