Of great note, it\u2019s funded primarily through payroll taxes paid by current workers and employers.<\/p>\n<p>Conceptually, at least, people earn benefits by paying into the system during their working years, and those benefits help provide income when they retire, become disabled, or pass away and leave eligible dependents behind.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a safety net that many working Americans are expecting to rely on come their golden years.<\/p>\n<p>Alas, the 2026 Trustees Report is throwing some cold water on those expectations.<\/p>\n<p>The big takeaway? Two key trust funds that help pay out the benefits are getting dangerously close to depleting.<\/p>\n<p>First, the\u00a0Old-Age and Survivors Insurance (OASI) Trust Fund currently covers 100 percent of all scheduled benefits.
