Former Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said she\u2019d like the job but stressed Democrats should focus first on the 2026 midterms and warned politics is too uncertain to plan ahead. Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, despite being widely viewed as a top contender, told reporters she will not run for president in 2028 and said she\u2019s still figuring out what to do next after taking time off. Maryland gov. But I\u2019ll play my part in any way that I think I can help the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The former Rhode Island governor emphasized that the party\u2019s immediate focus should remain on the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/2026-elections\/\">2026 midterm elections<\/a> rather than the next presidential contest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s still a very long time away. A very, very long time away. I can tell you that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whitmer\u2019s name had frequently appeared near the top of early lists of potential Democratic contenders, thanks in part to her success in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/huge-sidney-powell-witness-whom-ny-times-described-as-always-the-smartest-person-in-the-room-concludes-hundreds-of-thousands-of-votes-transferred-from-trump-to-biden-in-all-battleground-states\/\" title=\"HUGE! Michigan was decided by just 1.4 percentage points in the 2024 presidential election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite her insistence that she will not run, political observers continue to watch her next moves closely as she approaches the end of her second term.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe hasn\u2019t been doing political travel to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/exclusive-former-trump-aide-sam-nunberg-trump-considering-2024-run-i-believe-that-he-will\/\" title=\"Exclusive -- Former Trump Aide Sam Nunberg: Trump &#039;Considering&#039; 2024 ..., &#039;I Believe that He Will&#039;\">early primary states<\/a>, or anything like that,\u201d Michigan Republican strategist Jamie Roe <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/presidential\/4587320\/gretchen-whitmer-2028-prospects-dim\/\">told<\/a> the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cShe has not been engaging in the anti-Trump vitriol, at least not at a high-volume level.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe\u2019s actually worked with the president to accomplish some pretty good things for Michigan,\u201d Roe added. \u201cI think that takes you out of the national conversation, if you\u2019re not totally in line with where the base of the party is right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Looking beyond her governorship, Whitmer said she is still weighing what comes next after elected office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019ve gotten counsel from people who\u2019ve made the transition, whether it was my friend Gina Raimondo, who I sat with last night for a little bit, Pete Buttigieg, or Paul Ryan,\u201d Whitmer said. \u201cThe advice everyone says is, take a little bit of time, and so that\u2019s what I\u2019m gonna do.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-wes-moore\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wes Moore<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moore, another Democrat frequently mentioned as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/gavin-newsom-announces-his-pick-to-fill-dianne-feinsteins-senate-seat\/\" title=\"Gavin Newsom reveals choice for Feinstein&#039;s Senate seat.\">future national candidate<\/a>, was among the earliest party figures to reject speculation about a 2028 bid.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Appearing on NBC\u2019s <em>Meet the Press<\/em> last year, Moore <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/3796415\/wes-moore-2028-presidential-run-reelection\/\">said<\/a> his focus remains squarely on Maryland and his upcoming reelection campaign.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYeah, I\u2019m not running for president,\u201d Moore said when asked directly about a White House bid.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m excited about reelection. I\u2019m excited about what I\u2019m going to be able to do for the people of Maryland,\u201d he added. \u201cOur population is growing, Maryland is moving, and so I\u2019m really excited about going back in front of the people of my state and asking for another term.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moore will be on the ballot again in 2026, but speculation about his political future has proven difficult to shake.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/presidential\/4485941\/democrats-running-for-president-2028\/'\">THE DEMOCRATS WHO COULD RUN FOR PRESIDENT IN 2028<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was evident at the Rev. Al Sharpton\u2019s National Action Network convention in New York, where Sharpton raised the prospect of a 2028 run during a<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/4522442\/wes-moore-2028-maryland\/\"> fireside chat with the governor<\/a>.
