Susan Collins warned against relying on reconciliation for major defense funding instead of using regular appropriations, while Mitch McConnell said it’s effectively “not an option” for another reconciliation bill.

The article also notes that the GOP has already passed two reconciliation measures this term: the first largely extended Trump’s prior tax cuts, and the second focused on immigration funding. Pushing another package would require yet another contentious, high-pace effort, and the Senate’s procedural and parliamentary constraints-along with the risk of Democratic pressure for defections-make a third bill especially unrealistic with only about a month of legislative time left before the 2026 elections.

Senate Republicans are unlikely to take up a third budget reconciliation bill to advance more of President Donald Trump’s agenda.

The development is sure to be unwelcome news for their counterparts in the House, who have advocated a third bill.

Recommended Stories

GOP grows antsy over Trump intel pick as Democrats vow spy powers revolt

Bernie Sanders on possible 2028 bid: ‘I suspect that’s not going to happen’

Bernie Sanders calls out Trump: ‘You’re a president, not a dictator’

The ambitious push from House Republicans for another party-line package in Trump’s second term, and before they potentially lose power in the midterm elections, is not considered by senators to be a realistic feat, even as Congress on Tuesday was on the cusp of delivering its second in the form of $70 billion in immigration enforcement funding.

“We’re keeping the option open, for sure.
