Brother and sister Dario and Daniela Amodei departed OpenAI in December 2020 amid disputes over the company\u2019s strategic direction and AI safety. The pair founded Anthropic in 2021.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf you can make a company that people want to join, that engages in practices that people think are reasonable, while managing to maintain its position in the ecosystem, people will copy it,\u201d Amodei <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ugvHCXCOmm4&#038;t=1s\">explained<\/a> on the <em>Lex Fridman Podcast<\/em> of his decision to leave OpenAI. \u201cAnd the fact that you were doing it, especially the fact that you\u2019re doing it better than they are, causes them to change their behavior in a much more compelling way than if they\u2019re your boss and you\u2019re arguing with them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two years later, the OpenAI board issued a surprise announcement that it would fire CEO Sam Altman. OpenAI Chief Operating Officer Brad Lightcap <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/11\/18\/openai-exec-addresses-ceo-sam-altmans-firing-in-note-to-employees-read-the-full-memo.html\">told employees<\/a> that the company had ousted Altman not because of \u201cmalfeasance or anything related to our financial, business, safety, or security\/privacy practices,\u201d but rather because of a \u201cbreakdown in communication between Sam and the board.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Altman initially announced that he would join Microsoft before ultimately being <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2451281\/sam-altman-reinstated-as-ceo-of-openai-after-five-day-battle\/\">reinstated<\/a> by OpenAI after a five-day battle.
