A new poll suggests the voter verification protection is very popular in the Buckeye State \u2014 as it is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/congress\/americans-support-photo-id-vote-democrats-oppose-save-america-act-rcna259549\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">throughout the country<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Last week, Ohio\u2019s Republican-controlled state Senate easily passed <a href=\"https:\/\/ohiocapitaljournal.com\/2026\/06\/04\/ohio-senate-advances-photo-voter-id-amendment-measure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">(22-9)<\/a> a joint resolution that would send a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wisconsin-city-accused-of-electioneering-during-early-voting\/\" title=\"Wisconsin City Accused Of Electioneering During Early Voting\">constitutional amendment ballot question<\/a> to voters. Every Democrat voted against the measure. <\/p>\n<p>The resolution now moves to the GOP-led House, where it must pass with a three-fifths majority. Republicans have the votes, but some conservatives want to see photo ID for absentee ballots enshrined in Ohio\u2019s constitution as well. That likely will have to be a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wkyc.com\/article\/news\/politics\/elections\/ohio-senate-photo-voter-id-amendment-constitutional-house-republicans-security-absentee-ballots-poll-tax\/95-4120b772-eb26-4198-8e65-148fd6a1d2fa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">battle for a different day.<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>Ohio\u2019s photo ID law went into effect in <a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Voter_ID_in_Ohio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2023<\/a>. The Buckeye State is among 10 states that exclusively require individuals to show photo ID to vote in elections, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncsl.org\/elections-and-campaigns\/voter-id\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to<\/a> the National Conference of State Legislatures. Wisconsin voters last year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpr.org\/news\/april-2025-election-voter-id-requirement-passes-wisconsin-constitution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">overwhelmingly approved<\/a> enshrining photo ID at the polls in their state constitution. <\/p>\n<p>Following Wednesday\u2019s vote, Ohio Senate President Rob McColley told reporters that he expects the ballot question will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/3m-agrees-to-6-billion-settlement-over-us-military-earplugs-that-allegedly-caused-hearing-loss\/\" title=\"3M to pay B ...tlement for alleged hearing loss caused by military earplugs.\">receive overwhelming support<\/a>, asserting it\u2019s \u201cthe type of protection that voters want to see in the system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They sure do. <\/p>\n<h2>76 Percent<\/h2>\n<p>Over the weekend, <a href=\"https:\/\/honestelections.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Honest Elections Project\u00a0Action<\/a> released a <a href=\"https:\/\/hepaction.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/HEP-June-2026-OH-Polling-Memo1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">poll<\/a> that found 86 percent of likely Ohio voters surveyed believe that photo ID should be required to vote at the polls. It\u2019s a bipartisan issue, with photo ID backed by 99 percent of Republicans polled, 90 percent of independents, and 69 percent of Democrats. <\/p>\n<p>And the poll found 76 percent of respondents would vote for a constitutional amendment requiring voters to show photo ID \u2014 54 percent strongly in favor. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Ohio House should quickly pass <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.ohio.gov\/legislation\/136\/sjr10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SJR 10,<\/a> sending a ballot issue to voters to make voter ID permanent by enshrining it into the state constitution,\u201d Jason Snead, executive director of Honest Elections Project Action, said in a statement to The Federalist. \u201cThe Buckeye State deserves to have honest elections where it\u2019s easy to vote and hard to cheat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Honest Elections questioned <a href=\"https:\/\/hepaction.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/HEP-June-2026-OH-Polling-Memo1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">800 respondents<\/a> from May 27 to June 2. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.46 percent. <\/p>\n<p>The poll <a href=\"https:\/\/hepaction.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/HEP-June-2026-OH-Polling-Memo1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">also found<\/a> 70 percent of likely voters questioned said they would vote for an amendment requiring mail-in voters write their driver\u2019s license number or the last four digits of the Social Security number on the ballot, and 69 percent would back an <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >amendment requiring mail ballots include<\/a> a copy of the voter\u2019s ID. <\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s another important number for the GOP in a midterm election year traditionally not kind to the party in power: 86 percent of the poll\u2019s respondents said they\u2019d be more likely to vote in November \u2014 52 percent much more likely \u2014 if the constitutional amendment question were on the ballot. <\/p>\n<p>Ohio has a critical U.S Senate race, pitting incumbent Republican John Husted against far-left former Sen. Sherrod Brown. The Democrat lost his seat two years ago to Republican Bernie Moreno. <\/p>\n<h2>\u2018The Nationwide Standard\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Ohio\u2019s Senate did what the Republican-controlled U.S. Senate has failed to do: pass photo ID legislation. <\/p>\n<p>Last week,\u00a0 Sens. Susan Collins, R-Maine, Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/person\/mitch-mcconnell\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mitch McConnell,<\/a> R-Ky., and Thom Tills, R-N.C., <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/four-senate-republicans-unite-dems-block-trumps-save-america-act\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">helped kill<\/a> an effort to pass the <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/05\/13\/john-failure-is-not-an-option-thune-just-failed-election-integrity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SAVE America Act.<\/a> The Senate\u2019s biggest RINOs joined Democrats to stop a move to advance the bill requiring proof of citizenship to register to vote in U.S. elections and photo ID to cast a ballot in them. They voted against attaching the measure to the <a href=\"http:\/\/$70%20billion%20reconciliation%20bill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$70 billion reconciliation bill<\/a> to fund federal immigration law enforcement.  <\/p>\n<p>Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., has repeatedly said he doesn\u2019t have the votes to nuke the filibuster to get around the 60-vote threshold to pass the bill. Senate Republican leadership, allergic to work and political courage, don\u2019t have the stones to fight for passage of the critical election integrity bill via the <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/02\/17\/what-the-wall-street-journal-gets-wrong-about-the-talking-filibuster\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">talking filibuster,<\/a> which would force Democrats hold the floor and continuously debate to prevent a vote on a bill that is <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/03\/31\/save-act-is-4-times-more-popular-than-congress\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">four times more popular than Congress<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In lobbying for the SAVE America Act earlier this year on the Senate floor, Husted pushed back against Democrats\u2019 hyperbolic claims that photo ID laws disenfranchise voters. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince Ohio required photo ID law at the polls, there has been no evidence of voter suppression,\u201d the senator said. \u201cIn fact, the 2024 election produced the second-highest turnout that we\u2019ve had in the past four presidential elections.
