Illinois currently requires residents to get a goverment-issued license (the FOID card) to possess or buy firearms, with the state police taking up to about 30 days to approve or deny applications; NCLA says this delays access to a constitutional right.<\/p>\n<p>The dispute comes alongside pressure from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/cnn-is-shocked-to-learn-gun-owners-arent-just-old-white-men\/\" title=\"CNN Is Shocked To Learn Gun Owners Aren\u2019t Just Old, White Men\">gun control groups<\/a> for Illinois to pass a new bill targeting Glock pistols. Democratic State Rep. Justin Slaughter\u2019s House Bill 4471 would effectively ban certain semiautomatic pistols by prohibiting a Glock firing mechanism design (a cruciform trigger bar), aiming to prevent conversion switches that could allow pistols to fire like machine guns. The right is something you\u2019re supposed to have, and it means you can do something without the government\u2019s permission. When you flip that, putting the burden on the citizen, you\u2019re depriving people of liberty without due process of law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s very doubtful that this law does much to prevent crime, but it certainly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/breaking-scotus-strikes-down-new-york-concealed-carry-restrictions\/\" title=\"BREAKING: SCOTUS Strikes Down New York Concealed Carry Restrictions\">prevents law-abiding citizens<\/a> from getting a firearm when they urgently need one because it\u2019s not like you can get this thing instantly,\u201d Huebert continued, pointing to FOID card wait times, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/isp.illinois.gov\/Foid\/Statistics\">which averaged<\/a> between eight and 17 days last year. \u201cA lot of people may suddenly realize that they need to defend themselves urgently if they face a threat, and if you have to apply and wait, you\u2019re out of luck, and you don\u2019t get to exercise this right when you need it the most.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, Illinois could be poised to embrace another gun control measure and become the next state to pass legislation targeting Glocks after Connecticut recently passed a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/4556788\/connecticut-legislature-nears-24-hour-mark-debate-pistol-ban\/\">similar measure<\/a> into law. Democrats hold a supermajority in the Illinois legislature, making the blue state far more amenable to such measures. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Democratic State Rep. Justin Slaughter spearheaded the Illinois legislation, House Bill 4471, which would make the firing mechanism design of Glock guns illegal. The bill seeks to ban the sale of any semiautomatic pistol with a cruciform trigger bar, due to concerns the weapon could be altered to install a switch that turns a pistol into a machine gun. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Such switches are already illegal in Illinois, as they are in Connecticut, where Gov. Ned Lamont (D-CT) signed the \u201cGlock switch bill\u201d into law in late May. But Illinois lawmakers are under <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.everytown.org\/press\/illinois-gun-violence-prevention-committee-advances-hb-4471-to-address-growing-threat-of-diy-machine-guns\/\">intense pressure<\/a> from gun control groups such as Everytown for Gun Safety to pass the bill, citing fears that criminals are using cheap conversion devices to turn pistols into machine guns within minutes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is to put pressure on Glock; it\u2019s eaten away at one of its markets, like California, and New York, and Maryland, and Illinois, and anyone else who will join in this fight to make sure they can\u2019t continue to sell guns that they know are this easy to convert into machine guns,\u201d Everytown for Gun Safety Director Sam Levy <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.myjournalcourier.com\/news\/article\/illinois-house-pushes-effective-ban-glock-pistols-22266680.php\">said<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor students and young people, this issue is terrifying because we are the generation growing up practicing lockdown drills while weapons capable of firing dozens of rounds in seconds continue spreading in our communities,\u201d added Ajani Crenshaw, a student activist with Everytown. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Illinois Glock measure did not pass the legislature before the last session ended May 31. But it could be revived during the next session, as Slaughter touts the bill as \u201ca consumer product safety measure\u201d that \u201ccontinues to support smart, sensible gun ownership.\u201d Slaughter\u2019s office did not respond to the <em>Washington Examiner\u2019s<\/em> request for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gun control issues are sensitive in Illinois, as the state is home to some of the country\u2019s most intense laws regulating firearms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Massachusetts is the only other state that requires residents to obtain a license from the government in order to own a firearm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The law was challenged in court in Massachusetts due to its impact on nonresidents. Two New Hampshire residents were involved in the lawsuit after they were arrested on suspicion of carrying guns while traveling in Massachusetts.
