But in 2026, left-wing insurgents such as Sen. <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/bernie-sanders\/\">Bernie Sanders<\/a> (I-VT) and Rep. <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/alexandria-ocasio-cortez\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"282\">Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez<\/a> (D-NY) can raise money, provide organizational strength, and hold sway over the nomination process that rivals that of Senate Minority Leader <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/chuck-schumer\/\">Chuck Schumer<\/a> (D-NY). Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) rallied with Platner on Friday night.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Schumer\u2019s preferred candidate for the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/maine\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"193\">Maine<\/a> Senate seat, Gov. Janet Mills (D-ME), suspended her campaign when she fell well behind Platner in the polls. Schumer and Democratic leaders reconciled themselves to a Platner nomination in order to keep the race against Collins competitive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As Platner-related controversies grew, Mills <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/congressional\/4596931\/the-clock-ticks-janet-mills-shadow-campaign\/\">reminded voters<\/a> that she remains on the ballot for Tuesday\u2019s primary, but given the early vote, it would take a sizable shift in the Election Day vote for her to win.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Democrats are otherwise heavily favored to make gains in Congress in November, with a lead of 6.4 percentage points in the generic congressional ballot, according to the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolling.com\/polls\/state-of-the-union\/generic-congressional-vote\"><em>RealClearPolitics <\/em>polling average<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Republicans hold a slim majority in the House that can be washed away by something less than a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/premium\/4585577\/gop-hopes-favorable-map-counter-terrible-conditions\/\">full-on blue wave<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Republicans have a somewhat bigger majority in the Senate, and Democrats will need to do well in states much redder than Maine \u2014\u00a0Ohio, Iowa, Texas, Alaska, and North Carolina, among them \u2014\u00a0to flip the upper chamber.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The conservative Tea Party movement took advantage of a Republican wave election to take control of the House, ending a Democratic majority that was much larger than what House Speaker <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/mike-johnson\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"7043\">Mike Johnson<\/a> (R-LA) has to work with right now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Republicans gained 63 House seats in what then-President <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/barack-obama\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"360\">Barack Obama<\/a> called a \u201cshellacking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nevertheless, Republicans failed to win back the Senate because some of the Tea Party candidates Republicans nominated weren\u2019t ready for prime time. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the end, it took until Obama\u2019s second midterm election\u00a0four years later for Republicans to win a Senate majority. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Christine O\u2019Donnell in Delaware and Sharron Angle in Nevada are among the Tea Party candidates who lost what were seen as winnable Senate races for Republicans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Republicans aren\u2019t out of the woods yet when it comes to candidate quality concerns. Scandal-plagued Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton defeated Sen. John Cornyn (TX) in a Republican primary last month, making the Senate race with Democratic challenger James Talarico more expensive and potentially more competitive. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the left wing of the Democratic Party has taken the lead in defending Platner as controversies mounted, while more centrist voices such as Sen. <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/john-fetterman\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"1175\">John Fetterman<\/a> (D-PA) have urged caution. A small number of Democrats have called on Platner to drop out, but Squad-adjacent lawmakers are full speed ahead. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Previous socialist winners, such as New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, ran cautious and conventional campaigns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/premium\/4592977\/graham-platner-unfit-duty\/\"><strong>PLATNER IS UNFIT FOR DUTY <\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/f\/?id=0000019e-95c1-d71f-a5df-97e7612c0000&#038;nname=playbook&#038;nid=0000014f-1646-d88f-a1cf-5f46b7bd0000&#038;nrid=849aba7f-f4d5-44d1-8dff-3ca5fb878b65\">polls<\/a> have shown the Maine Senate race <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/4596468\/republicans-pour-3-million-susan-collins-campaign-graham-platner-support-stalls\/\">tightening<\/a> since the latest revelations.
