They warn that if the United States walks away or reduces its commitment, Finland and other partners coudl become exposed, especially as Finland faces Russia directly due to its long shared border.<\/p>\n<p>Simultaneously occurring, Finland argues that European defense weaknesses have contributed to the problem, including years when many countries missed NATO spending targets or padded \u201cdefense\u201d budgets. Finnish leaders acknowledge some European progress as Trump pressured members to increase investment and note that most allies are now meeting defense spending expectations and are working toward further targets.<\/p>\n<p>The article also highlights Finland\u2019s belief that NATO\u2019s global influence depends on a broad \u201calliance network\u201d reaching beyond Europe-into regions like the Middle East and the Pacific-through partnerships with countries such as Japan and Australia. (Mark Schiefelbein\/AP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have exactly the same position as President Trump in the sense that we think that NATO is not at its full potential yet because most of the European countries have not invested enough in the past years in defense and deterrence,\u201d Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen said in a private meeting with American journalists, including the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>, in Helsinki last month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finland feels the heat from Russian aggression far more sharply than Western European countries because of its shared land border, watching its neighbor with weary concern for decades. It <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/ice-arrests-fell-from-5119-to-just-1970-in-february\/\" title=\"ICE Arrests Fell From 5,119 To Just 1,970 In February\">prioritized national security<\/a> but hoped to remain militarily neutral. The outbreak of the war with Ukraine ultimately showed Finnish leaders that it was foolish to expect Russia to change course.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have always hoped that Russia will democratize themselves and become some kind of Western society,\u201d Finnish Defense Minister Antti Hakkanen said in a separate meeting. \u201cBut we have to be realistic, that does not happen. And, that\u2019s why Finland has always kept our guard up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When Finland joined the alliance in 2023, it entered with one of the most effective militaries in Europe. Beyond defense technology and robust spending on national security, the Finnish military excels in sheer manpower and willingness to fight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Producing \u201csome ammunition from factories\u201d is easy, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-has-yet-to-call-israels-netanyahu\/\" title=\"Biden Has Yet To Call Israel\u2019s Netanyahu\">defense minister<\/a> contended, as is supplying equipment. Cultivating citizens with a \u201cwill to defend the country\u201d is a much more difficult task.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Conscription is universal for men beginning at age 18. Mandatory service lasts between 165 and 347 days, depending on the role. After that, men who are not pursuing a career in the military are transferred to the reserves, where they can be called up for activation during times of emergency or for refresher training until they age out.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Finnish conscripts wearing winter camouflage practice installing anti-personnel mines in Kajaani, Finland, Feb. 3, 2026. (Alessandro RAMPAZZO \/ AFP \/ Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This system has resulted in approximately 80% of Finns reporting that they would be willing to take up arms to defend their country, dramatically higher than most other NATO member states, which fail to clear 50%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIndependent of our smaller size, we have actually one of the largest armies in Europe \u2026 and not in relative terms, but in actual terms,\u201d Valtonen said. \u201cSo we take pride in that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prior to 2025, multiple NATO members routinely failed to meet the alliance\u2019s 2014 agreement to spend at least 2% of GDP on defense. Others packed questionable expenditures into their \u201cdefense budgets\u201d to pad out their totals without actually contributing to joint security.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Valtonen offered some qualified defense of European counterparts in the alliance, contending that Trump and previous U.S. administrations have expected the continent to invest in defense only by purchasing American weapons. She suggested that such an arrangement undermines Europe\u2019s ability to produce a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/finland-feels-the-same-as-trump-on-nato-failures-but-pleads-for-unity\/\" title=\"... feels the same as ... on ... failures but pleads for unity\">credible defense industry<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump cracked the whip on the alliance at the beginning of his second term, and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte has <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/world\/4504682\/nato-reports-20-percent-increase-spending-allies\/\">credited the president<\/a> with forcing a \u201creal shift in mindset\u201d among delinquent members.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Valtonen also pointed to \u201cnot so long ago\u201d when \u201cnot only Americans but many other countries in Europe\u201d urged post-reunification Germany not to invest in its own defense at all. That demand has come back to bite the alliance as one of its wealthiest members <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/world\/4541197\/germany-strategy-europe-strongest-military-2039\/\">struggles to refurbish its decrepit military<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNow all of a sudden they have to totally change course,\u201d Valtonen said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All NATO members are now hitting their spending expectations for the first time, a development that should have solidified confidence in the alliance\u2019s future. All members, except Spain, have also committed to allocating 5% of their GDP to defense spending by 2035.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But some states\u2019 failure to support U.S. operations against Iran, even passively, has led Trump to declare he \u201cneeds nothing from NATO\u201d and <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/defense\/4554419\/trump-europe-troops-nato-germany\/\">reduce American personnel<\/a> in Europe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think sometimes it seems that President Trump, when he speaks about NATO, he speaks about Europe \u2014 but Europe and NATO, of course, are two different things,\u201d Valtonen said, adding that Trump should \u201ckeep what is happening in the Middle East now separated from NATO.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Finnish troops train in Niinisalo, Finland, Dec. 9, 2025. (Alessandro Rampazzo \/ Bloomberg \/ Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hakkanen warned that the U.S. could risk losing more than Europe if it allowed outside conflicts to disrupt its commitment to NATO and other alliances.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe big picture is that Russia and China are trying to separate Western countries,\u201d Hakkanen said. \u201cThat will benefit China mostly because they don\u2019t have this kind of unique alliance globally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NATO\u2019s influence beyond Europe and North America is bolstered by collateral alliances between member countries and outside allies such as Japan and Australia. Through these mutual defense pacts, NATO projects power into regions such as the Middle East and the Pacific.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe U.S.\u2019s biggest influence in the world comes through alliances in the Pacific area, Middle East, Europe, and all that stuff, and that\u2019s why this alliance network \u2014 not just U.S.-Europe, but the alliance network \u2014 is the key,\u201d the defense minister asserted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Russia and China have repeatedly pushed the idea that the future of geopolitics is multipolar. In their vision, the global hegemony enjoyed by the U.S. is undercut and challenged by alternative poles of power with their own spheres of influence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hakkanen warned that partners and non-NATO allies worldwide are watching the alliance carefully to determine whether the \u201cglobal U.S. alliance network\u201d has a future.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Civilian volunteers during a weekend with the National Defence Training Association of Finland at a military base in Helsinki, Finland, May 14, 2022. (Alessandro Rampazzo \/ Bloomberg \/ Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPacific area partners and Middle East partners are also watching closely [to see] what is the future of this global U.S. alliance network,\u201d the defense minister said. \u201cAnd this is the main objective for Russia and especially China in [the] long term \u2014 to separate this alliance or bring mistrust into that alliance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finland\u2019s decision to abandon decades of neutrality and join NATO was a strategic gamble. Its realignment outraged Russia and put a target on its back as one of the West\u2019s easternmost <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/world\/4563391\/finland-president-stubb-russia-ukraine-talks\/\">bulwarks against Moscow\u2019s sphere of influence<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ultimately, Finland\u2019s tone toward the mercurial Trump administration is one of desperation, well aware that a U.S. withdrawal would leave it exposed, vulnerable, and unprepared to face the threats that loom in the east.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/world\/4590992\/marco-rubio-iran-navy-boston-whalers-machine-guns\/\"><strong>RUBIO SAYS IRANIAN NAVY IS JUST \u2018A BUNCH OF BOSTON WHALERS WITH MACHINE GUNS\u2019 <\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRussia might be, just for whatever reason, willing to test Article 5,\u201d Valtonen said. \u201cIf there is any doubt that the U.S. would not be on board in that, then of course it crumbles altogether.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe definitely hope that the U.S. is not leaving NATO. It is not only out of self-interest but also for, basically, I would say, the future of humankind.
