Ryan Zinke (R-MT). Democrats have targeted the western Montana district with no success in the past two cycles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Forstag\u2019s work experience includes periods of lobbying Montana lawmakers for the state\u2019s ACLU branch, but his stump speech centers mostly on his years as a labor organizer involved in unions and parachuting into remote areas for the U.S. Forest Service to fight wildfires, also known as a smokejumper.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/disgraced-san-francisco-ex-da-chesa-boudin-wont-rule-out-another-run\/\" title=\"Disgraced San Francisco Ex-DA Chesa Boudin Won&#039;t Rule Out Another Run\">-time political candidate<\/a> has racked up progressive support, including endorsements from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), for his pro-labor background.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSam may play a firefighter on social media, but he\u2019s just a slimy pay-to-play lobbyist who doesn\u2019t care about Montana values or an honest wage,\u201d said Heather Swift, Flint\u2019s campaign manager, following Forstag\u2019s nomination.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The attacks reflect a broader challenge facing Democrats as they try to claw back support among working-class voters who have drifted toward Republicans over the past decade. Candidates with backgrounds in farming, organized labor, firefighting, or military service have become increasingly attractive recruits, but those biographies also invite scrutiny from opponents eager to paint them as political insiders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Democratic Senate candidate <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/graham-platner\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"22643\">Graham Platner<\/a> has also faced accusations from Republicans of overstating his career as an oyster farmer. The combat veteran is taking on longtime centrist Sen. <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/susan-collins\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"1302\">Susan Collins<\/a> (R-ME).<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Platner, facing his latest scandal over allegations from former girlfriends of toxic relationships, has <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=HQF94bqQAfs\">positioned himself<\/a> as the \u201cworking-class guy that lives a working-class life\u201d with \u201can authenticity there that most other politicians just can\u2019t provide because it\u2019s inauthentic for them.\u201d Republicans <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nrsc.org\/press-releases\/new-ad-we-fixed-it-for-you-graham-2026-04-29\/\">call him<\/a> the \u201cprep-school kid\u201d for graduating from a private high school and characterize him as reliant on his family for \u201cliving in a house daddy bought him\u201d and his biggest oyster customer being his mother\u2019s restaurant.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Graham Platner, Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate, shows oyster shells to a visitor at his home on Monday, Nov. 3, 2025, in Sullivan, Maine. Derrick Van Orden (R) spotlighted Democrats\u2019 efforts to flip the competitive seat sought by Democrat Rebecca Cooke.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking before the visit on the family farm where she grew up, Cooke, a self-described political outsider, pointed fingers at Trump\u2019s tariffs for higher agricultural prices. The Van Orden campaign <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/pro.stateaffairs.com\/wi\/press-releases\/van-orden-campaign-meet-rebecca-cooke-another-d-c-insider-conning-their-way-into-office\">argues<\/a> her appeal as a \u201cfarm-raised waitress\u201d is undercut by her past work in Democratic politics, at think tanks, on campaigns, and founding a consulting firm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/congressional\/4512326\/harris-arkansas-democrat-former-vice-president\/\">Hallie Shoffner<\/a>, the Arkansas Democratic Senate nominee running a long-shot bid to unseat Sen. <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/tom-cotton\/\">Tom Cotton<\/a> (R), has been branded by Republicans as a left-wing wolf in sheep\u2019s clothing rather than a farmer by trade for her <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/democrats\/shes-running-for-senate-in-arkansas-as-a-lifelong-farmer-after-hiring-a-marketing-firm-to-build-a-new-brand-as-farmherhallie\/\">activism on progressive causes<\/a> and former political donations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Republicans, however, aren\u2019t immune to running candidates with holes in their r\u00e9sum\u00e9s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the race for governor in Trump-dominated Iowa, MAHA-aligned Republican businessman Zach Lahn\u2019s campaign as an outsider farmer helped him upset Rep. Randy Feenstra (R-IA) on Tuesday night.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/4594352\/midterm-countdown-expensive\/\">MIDTERM COUNTDOWN: THE MOST EXPENSIVE MIDTERM EVER?<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The anti-establishment narrative from Lahn, who resides on his longtime family farm and owns an investment company, has been targeted by Democrats for his years of work as a GOP political operative. That includes on Iowa congressional campaigns, at the conservative Americans for Prosperity advocacy group, and as a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.legistorm.com\/person\/bio\/171511\/Zachary_A_Lahn.html\">staffer<\/a> for Sen. Steve Daines (R-MT) and former Sen. Cory Gardner (R-CO) when they both served in the House.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether the attacks resonate with voters remains to be seen. But as voters increasingly reward candidates who appear authentic and punish those who seem manufactured, a politician\u2019s biography has become as important to campaigns as their policy positions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>James A.
