The first case, brought in May 2024, centered on 18 indicted individuals-including prominent figures such as Mark Meadows, John Eastman, and Rudy Giuliani, and also 11 Arizona Republicans who served as alternate electors in 2020-with Trump listed as an unindicted co-conspirator.<\/p>\n<p>The article argues that Mayes\u2019 prosecution has been politically motivated and cites prior court findings that Mayes allegedly broke the law, including illegally withholding communications with the left-leaning states United Democracy Center, which the piece claims helped shape an indictment pathway. The announcement came shortly after the Arizona Supreme Court <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.azcourts.gov\/aacc\/appella\/ASC\/CV\/CV250271.pdf\">den<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/apps.azcourts.gov\/aacc\/appella\/ASC\/CV\/CV250271.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">i<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/apps.azcourts.gov\/aacc\/appella\/ASC\/CV\/CV250271.pdf\">ed<\/a> the state\u2019s appeal to resurrect the moribund political witch hunt. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Arizona Attorney General\u2019s Office will return this case to the grand jury,\u201d Richie Taylor, spokesman for the AG, <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/regulation\/court-battles\/5911038-fake-electors-case-arizona-ag\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> in a statement. \u201cWe decline to comment further at this time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A prosecution years in the making, Mayes ultimately in May 2024 got a grand jury to <a href=\"https:\/\/mcusercontent.com\/cc1fad182b6d6f8b1e352e206\/files\/fa85cddf-ccc6-7dee-dd58-ff5e80d53b15\/Indictment.03.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">indict<\/a> 18 people, including former Trump chief of staff Mark Meadows, constitutional scholar John Eastman, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, and 11 Arizona Republicans who served as alternate electors in 2020. They are accused of serving as \u201cfake\u201d presidential electors bent on unlawfully overturning Democrat Joe Biden\u2019s razor-thin win in the Grand Canyon State.  <\/p>\n<p>After pleading not guilty to the charges against him, Eastman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/politics\/attorney-john-eastman-pleads-not-guilty-in-2020-election-overturn-case\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">expressed<\/a> confidence that, if the laws were faithfully applied, he would be \u201cfully exonerated at the end of the process.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The laws have not been faithfully applied and the weaponization rolls on. The leftist election law group reportedly advised Mayes\u2019 office on a pathway to indict the alternate electors.  <\/p>\n<p>Nonprofit tracker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.influencewatch.org\/non-profit\/states-united-democracy-center\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">InfluenceWatch<\/a> says States United Democracy Center \u201cwas founded as one of many organizing coalitions and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wi-city-looks-to-tap-leftist-lawfare-attorneys-ahead-of-election\/\" title=\"WI City Looks To Tap Leftist ...fare Attorneys Ahead Of Election\">left-leaning strategy groups<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >coordinate left-leaning advocacy groups<\/a> and Democratic campaign committees in the event that then-President Donald Trump lost and subsequently contested the results of the 2020 Presidential Election.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.influencewatch.org\/person\/norman-l-eisen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Norm Eisen<\/a>, a left-leaning lawyer who served as the \u201cEthics Czar\u201d in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.influencewatch.org\/government-agency\/obama-administration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Obama White House<\/a>, founded the organization.<\/p>\n<p>Judicial Watch <a href=\"https:\/\/www.judicialwatch.org\/documents\/jw-v-mayes-az-fake-electors-complaint-005732\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sued<\/a> the attorney general, who insisted the documents sought were protected by attorney-client privilege. The judge disagreed. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cJudicial Watch is excited that the court has slapped back the unlawful secrecy about anti-Trump lawfare abuse by Arizona\u2019s AG Kris Mayes,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.judicialwatch.org\/state-ag-kris-mayes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton. \u201cWe are pushing hard in court for full disclosure about the details of what looks to be a conspiracy by the AG\u2019s office to punish Trump supporters for exercising their fundamental rights.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p>An appeals court later <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsfromthestates.com\/article\/arizona-fake-electors-prosecution-hits-roadblock-court-declines-appeal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rejected<\/a> Mayes\u2019 motion to resume her crooked case against the president\u2019s allies. She weighed her options, her spokesman <a href=\"https:\/\/azcapitoltimes.com\/news\/2025\/09\/24\/ag-kris-mayes-faces-setback-in-election-fraud-case\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">insisting <\/a>that the case \u201chas never been about anything other than preserving democracy and upholding the rule of law.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>\u2018This Obsession is not Justice\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Arizona GOP chairwoman Gina Swoboda at the time <a href=\"https:\/\/azcapitoltimes.com\/news\/2025\/09\/24\/ag-kris-mayes-faces-setback-in-election-fraud-case\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told <\/a>the Arizona Capitol Times to \u201cstop wasting time and taxpayer resources on partisan lawfare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFive years later, Kris Mayes is still fixated on 2020 while violent crime, fentanyl trafficking, and border chaos threaten our communities every single day,\u201d Swoboda said in the statement. \u201cThis obsession is not justice \u2014 it\u2019s politics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mayes then opted to take her appeal to the state Supreme Court. She still can\u2019t quit the weaponized campaign despite being forced to start all over again. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood news out of Arizona today.
