Prosecutors say the photojournalist, Angelina Katsanis, was injured and taken to a hospital after Brown reportedly snatched her bag.  <\/p>\n<p>Attorney General Jennifer davenport announced the charge and criticized the alleged conduct, saying no one is above the law and that the case follows the office\u2019s review of improper law-enforcement behaviour. Brown has been suspended without pay pending further investigation. If convicted,he faces 3-5 years in prison and up to a $15,000 fine.  <\/p>\n<p>Authorities recovered Katsanis\u2019s belongings through a search warrant,but some items reportedly still had her name and phone number. Katsanis was injured and taken to a nearby hospital when Brown allegedly snatched her bag. Davenport criticized the sergeant\u2019s alleged misconduct.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-paywall\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen an officer does what is alleged in this case, it is a disservice to the profession and the public,\u201d the Democratic attorney general said in a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.njoag.gov\/essex-county-prosecutors-office-sergeant-allegedly-steals-injured-journalists-camera-bag-and-equipment-during-delaney-hall-protest-charged-with-theft\/\">statement<\/a>. \u201cI <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/gop-senators-urge-biden-not-to-relocate-detainees-from-guantanamo-bay\/\" title=\"GOP senators urge Biden not to relocate detainees from Guantanamo Bay\">previously pledged<\/a> that our Office would review allegations of improper conduct by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-red-wave-of-conservative-women-elected-to-congress\/\" title=\"The Red Wave of Conservative Women Elected to Congress\">law enforcement<\/a>. We are doing exactly that, and this case is a result of that effort.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLet me be clear: absolutely no one is above the law,\u201d she continued. \u201cWe will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/london-breed-on-boudin-criticizing-crime-measures-hes-white-and-didnt-grow-up-poor-doesnt-get-desire-to-be-safe\/\" title=\"London Breed on Boudin Criticizing Crime Measures: He&#039;s White and Didn&#039;t Grow Up Poor, Doesn&#039;t Get &#039;Desire to Be Safe&#039;\">hold law enforcement accountable<\/a> when they abuse the tremendous position of public trust that they occupy and choose to break the law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Essex County Prosecutor Theodore Stephens II said Brown \u201chas been suspended without pay pending the outcome of an investigation by the Attorney General\u2019s Office.\u201d If convicted on the third-degree charge, Brown could face a sentence between three and five years and a maximum $15,000 fine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Katsanis, who was left in a wheelchair as a result of her leg injury, was shocked by the officer\u2019s alleged theft of her personal property.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019ve thought a lot about how the officers are supposed to be there to uphold the law and protect us and protect property \u2014 and this is the exact opposite of that,\u201d she told the <em>Associated Press.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Authorities recovered her belongings while executing a search warrant at Brown\u2019s home on Wednesday, according to the complaint. Before they were retrieved, some of the missing items still had Katsanis\u2019s name and phone number on them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Delaney Hall has been the site of clashes between protesters and authorities, especially <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/ice\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/ice\/\">Immigration and Customs Enforcement<\/a> officers. Arrests continue to be made as the protests near two weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gov. <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/mikie-sherrill\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"19767\">Mikie Sherrill<\/a> (D-NJ) deployed state police to contain the tense situation last week before Newark officials stepped in. On Thursday, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka announced that the Newark Police Division\u2019s presence at Delaney Hall would be scaled back.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe will not continue to spend [resources] and tax dollars in an already strapped budget to safeguard a privately-owned facility, especially when it places our officers at unnecessary risk,\u201d Baraka said in a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CityofNewarkNJ\/status\/2062649096448426235\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CityofNewarkNJ\/status\/2062649096448426235\">statement<\/a>. \u201cNor will we ask our officers to engage in practices that contradict our values of fairness, restraint, and respect for human rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/immigration\/4591443\/new-jersey-attorney-general-sues-delaney-hall\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/immigration\/4591443\/new-jersey-attorney-general-sues-delaney-hall\/\">NEW JERSEY ATTORNEY GENERAL SUES OPERATOR OF DELANEY HALL DETENTION CENTER<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGiven the significant reduction in unrest, the City will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/capitol-police-planning-to-start-taking-down-riot-fencing\/\" title=\"Capitol Police Planning to Start Taking Down Riot Fencing\">begin scaling back<\/a> its presence at Delaney Hall,\u201d he added. \u201cAfter tonight, NPD will focus on traffic management and public safety, ensuring the protection of both protesters and motorists.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Democratic mayor also urged \u201call protesters to remain peaceful,\u201d even though the protesters have been escalating the violence as police officers try to handle the riots.
