Metro. PETA says WMATA used a rule against ads that \u201cinfluence members of the public\u201d on issues with \u201cvarying opinions\u201d to justify rejecting the ads, which PETA argues violates its First Amendment rights.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >rejected ads included animal imagery<\/a> with donation prompts and a QR code, such as: \u201cHelp us help them. Donate to PETA,\u201d a \u201cfree Vegan Starter Kit\u201d membership pitch, and an ad featuring pigs with messaging tied to donating. PETA also cites its prior legal fight with WMATA, saying it had paused earlier action in 2025 after WMATA revised its advertising criteria, but that this recent rejection still conflicts with the updated guidelines.<\/p>\n<p>PETA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/georgia-secretary-of-state-there-will-be-a-recount\/\" title=\"Georgia Secretary of State: &#039;There Will Be a Recount&#039;\">general counsel<\/a> said the group expects to prove WMATA\u2019s decision was unconstitutional and that PETA should be allowed to seek donations through Metro rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/wmata\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"3182\">Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority<\/a> on Thursday, arguing the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/washington-dc\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"260\">Washington, D.C.,<\/a> agency illegally barred the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/new-yorks-highest-court-rules-bronx-zoo-elephant-is-not-a-person-cant-be-considered-illegally-confined\/\" title=\"New York\u2019s class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lawsuit objects to WMATA\u2019s decision last year to bar three of PETA\u2019s proposed advertisements from the D.C. metro because they violated the agency\u2019s rule prohibiting \u201cadvertisements intended to influence members of the public regarding an issue on which there are varying opinions.\u201d PETA argued that the transportation agency and General Manager Randy Clarke are violating the nonprofit group\u2019s First Amendment rights by preventing them from placing their advertisements.<\/p>\n<section class=\"explore-more-section\" mission WMATA, under the leadership of Defendant Randy Clarke, appears to have instituted a blanket ban on any ads from PETA,\u201d the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/WMATA.pdf\">complaint<\/a> reads. \u201cWMATA enforces this ban no matter how anodyne and compliant with WMATA policies PETA\u2019s proposed ads may be.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-paywall\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The three advertisements the animal rights organization proposed last year each depicted images of animals with captions and QR codes to donate to the organization. The first advertisement was an image of a cat, pig, dog, and chicken grouped together, reading \u201cHelp us help them. Please donate to PETA.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thursday\u2019s complaint is the latest lawsuit PETA has filed against WMATA, following a similar <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/news\/peta-sues-transit-agency-for-rejecting-ads\/\">2017 lawsuit<\/a> against the agency\u2019s advertising guidelines.
