It claims that a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/former-prosecutor-charged-for-disguising-sealed-trump-report-as-cake-recipes\/\" title=\"Former prosecutor charged for disguising sealed Trump report as cake recipes\">newly unsealed federal indictment<\/a> alleges the SPLC did the opposite-secretly paying someone to produce racist online posts under SPLC supervision.<\/p>\n<p>According to the piece, prosecutors say the SPLC used millions from donations to fund a \u201ccovert network\u201d linked to violent extremist groups, including people tied to the KKK. the unsealed indictment, it says, identifies a \u201cfield source\u201d involved with online coordination around the 2017 \u201cUnite the Right\u201d rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, and states that the source attended the event under SPLC direction, made racist postings, and helped arrange transportation for attendees. Yet all the while the SPLC was allegedly paying a source to make racist online posts under its direction, according to a newly unsealed federal indictment. <\/p>\n<p>The SPLC was <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/05\/21\/house-judiciary-subpoenas-splc-for-communications-with-racist-groups-it-allegedly-funded\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">indicted<\/a> by a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/missouri-man-charged-with-threatening-to-murder-2-us-congressmen\/\" title=\"Missouri Man Charged With Threatening to Murder 2 US Congressmen\">federal grand jury<\/a> last month for wire fraud and conspiracy to commit concealment money laundering. Prosecutors allege the SPLC used millions of dollars received through donations to pay a \u201ccovert network of individuals\u201d that were a part of \u201cviolent extremists groups\u201d like the KKK. <\/p>\n<div id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-3442610584\" class=\"d-flex justify-content-center fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2 fdrlst__b89e9-entity-placement\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1463670073398-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Now, the newly unsealed indictment reveals that the SPLC had a field source who was \u201ca member of the online leadership chat group that planned the 2017 \u2018Unite the Right\u2019 event in Charlottesville, Virginia and attended the event at the direction of the SPLC.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That field source, the indictment explains, \u201cmade racist postings under the supervision of the <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/04\/21\/report-doj-investigating-southern-poverty-law-center-for-use-of-paid-informants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SPLC<\/a> and helped coordinate transportation to the event for several attendees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That field source was paid more than $270,000 by the SPLC between 2015 and 2023. <\/p>\n<p>The allegation is in stark contrast to the role the SPLC played for years, that is, apparently the leading arbiter in what constitutes \u201chate\u201d and \u201cextremism.\u201d The organization repeatedly encouraged corporations and other institutions to blacklist and censor Christian and conservative groups over fake allegations that they were doing what the SPLC appears to have <em>actually<\/em> been doing. <\/p>\n<p>And as The Federalist\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/04\/22\/flashback-indicted-splc-once-targeted-the-federalist-for-publishing-an-attorney-generals-speech\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Elle Purnell<\/a> wrote in these pages, \u201cthe smear campaign [the SPLC] wages against Christian and conservative organizations by equating them to actually extreme groups threatens not just their reputations but their fundraising prospects and even their physical safety.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Republican members of the House Judiciary Committee <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2020\/08\/24\/gop-house-members-ask-jeff-bezos-to-explain-amazons-reliance-on-splc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sent a letter<\/a> to Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos in 2020 regarding Amazon Smile\u2019s \u2014 the corporation\u2019s charity program \u2014 relationship with the SPLC. According to the letter, the relationship between the two was part of a larger effort to \u201ccensor conservative views\u201d by excluding conservative groups \u201cfrom Amazon\u2019s heavily-trafficked digital platform\u201d which \u201cleads to less exposure for these groups and fewer opportunities for donations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn this way, Amazon\u2019s reliance on the SPLC as a barometer to determine the eligibility of charitable organizations on AmazonSmile serves to discriminate against conservative views,\u201d the letter continued. <\/p>\n<p>So while the SPLC was denoting organizations as promoters of hate and impacting their eligibility to make money, federal prosecutors allege the group was busy paying a source to make racist online posts under its supervision. <\/p>\n<p>Another organization targeted by the SPLC was Turning Point USA. SPLC writer Rachael Fugardi accused Turning Point USA of advancing so called \u201cwhite Christian supremacy\u201d in a May 2025 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.splcenter.org\/resources\/reports\/turning-point-usa-case-study-hard-right-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">article<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cTurning Point USA\u2019s primary strategy is sowing and exploiting fear that white Christian supremacy is under attack by nefarious actors, including immigrants, the LGBTQ+ community and civil rights activists,\u201d Fugardi wrote, adding Turning Point is trying to Ssow fear and division to <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >enforce social hierarchies rooted<\/a> in supremacism,\u201d which she said \u201cis emblematic of the hard right\u2019s broader political project to destroy our foundational democratic principles and institutions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>SPLC also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.splcenter.org\/resources\/extremist-files\/alliance-defending-freedom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">designated<\/a> Alliance Defending Freedom as a \u201chate group.\u201d Alliance Defending Freedom\u2019s work includes <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/01\/09\/at-scotus-female-athletes-gear-up-to-protect-womens-sports-from-leftists-trans-agenda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">protecting<\/a> women\u2019s sports from mentally ill men and <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/11\/21\/pro-life-center-takes-its-fight-against-democrat-lawfare-to-the-supreme-court\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">defending<\/a> pro-life centers against Democrat lawfare.<\/p>\n<p>The SPLC also <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/04\/22\/flashback-indicted-splc-once-targeted-the-federalist-for-publishing-an-attorney-generals-speech\/\">targeted<\/a> The Federalist, categorizing this outlet under its \u201cHatewatch\u201d label and accusing us of being a \u201crabidly partisan\u201d purveyor of \u201canti-LBGT and specifically anti-trans writings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The offense was because The Federalist published a transcript of an exclusive speech then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions gave  at an event held by Alliance Defending Freedom. <\/p>\n<p>The newly unsealed indictment shows that SPLC was working to stigmatize conservative groups and censor their reach across major platforms by falsely accusing them of racism, all the while they themselves were allegedly engaged in the very sort of racist conduct they claimed to be combating. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">\n<div class=\"article-author-description fst-italic\">      Brianna Lyman is an elections correspondent at The Federalist.
