John Fetterman said he was \u201cabsolutely wrong\u201d in 2022 when he campaigned to eliminate the Senate filibuster. After reconsidering, he argues that removing it would leave the minority party with \u201clittle to no voice,\u201d effectively turning the Senate into a smaller version of the House where minority rights are weaker.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on *The Katie Miller Podcast*, fetterman said he now believes former Sens. joe Manchin and Krysten Sinema were right to oppose changes that would have weakened or abolished the filibuster, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/schumer-dems-will-pass-covid-relief-bill-with-or-without-gop\/\" title=\"Schumer: Dems will pass COVID relief bill with or without GOP\">typically requires 60 votes<\/a> to advance most legislation. In 202, Machin and Sinema joined Republicans in blocking a Democratic effort to change Senate rules and create an exception for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-signs-executive-order-to-make-it-easier-to-vote-calls-gop-election-reform-efforts-an-all-out-assault-on-voting-rights\/\" title=\"Biden Signs Executive Order \u2018To Make It Easier\u2019 To Vote, Calls GOP Election Reform Efforts \u2018An All-Out Assault\u2019 On Voting Rights\">voting rights legislation<\/a>, effectively preserving the 60-vote threshold. Their stance drew sharp criticism from many Democratic lawmakers and candidates, including Fetterman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the time, Fetterman argued that the chamber\u2019s rules were preventing action on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/j-d-vance-and-the-american-dream\/\" title=\"J.D. Vance and the American Dream\">issues voters<\/a> had elected Democrats to address.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since taking office in 2023, however, Fetterman has increasingly broken with the party\u2019s progressive wing on a range of issues, including government funding fights, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/section\/policy\/immigration\/\" type=\"category\" id=\"15\">immigration<\/a>, and support for <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/israel\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"219\">Israel<\/a>. He has also become more outspoken in criticizing what he views as ideological extremes within his party.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Supporters of the filibuster argue the rule forces bipartisan compromise and <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >prevents dramatic policy swings<\/a> whenever control of Congress changes. Fetterman told Miller, whose husband is White House deputy chief of staff for policy <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/stephen-miller\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"2967\">Stephen Miller<\/a>, that eliminating the filibuster effectively silences the minority party in the chamber.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf we lose the filibuster, then the rights of the minority, whether that will be Democrat or Republican \u2026 would have effectively little to no voice,\u201d Fetterman said. \u201cIf we become a smaller version of the House, then that would have profound ramifications for the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fetterman added that the \u201centire Democratic Party was wrong\u201d for having pushed to eliminate the rule.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The senator also noted the irony that Democrats, having previously pushed to eliminate the filibuster, now often use it to their advantage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Katie Miller then asked Fetterman if he thinks Democrats would try to get rid of the filibuster rule if they regain control of Congress in the midterm elections.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/daily-memo\/4591652\/democratic-mess-maine-graham-platner\/\"><strong>THE DEMOCRATIC MESS IN MAINE<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBoth parties think the other one is going to, you know, grab for the pistol under the table,\u201d Fetterman said. \u201cI think \u2026 we have to have that trust that we\u2019re not going to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think everybody can realize that the filibuster is part of why the Senate functions and how important that has to be distinct [from] the House,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sen.
