I mean, I am a doctor.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-paywall\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The audience and hosts erupted in laughter. Jill Biden holds a Doctor of Education degree in educational leadership from the University of Delaware, which she received during her husband\u2019s final term in the Senate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Joe Biden\u2019s condition as president wasn\u2019t always a laughing matter, as Jill herself acknowledged during a previous interview that she thought he might have been having a stroke during his disastrous debate with President <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That debate ended Biden\u2019s reelection campaign, but his family and closest advisers resisted fellow Democrats\u2019 initial attempts to nudge him from the top of the ticket.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chief among them was Jill Biden, who in real time defended her husband\u2019s debate performance even though she acknowledged in her book and subsequent promotional interviews that they knew how badly it went. She <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/4590711\/jill-biden-believes-joe-biden-wouldve-won-against-trump\/\">still insists<\/a> he could have won the election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the mostly softball interviews for her memoir, Jill Biden has repeatedly been asked why she did so.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd in the days and weeks after that, you continued to insist that the president was fine,\u201d Craig Melvin of NBC\u2019s <em>Today <\/em>pressed. \u201cHow \u2014 how do you square thinking that he may have had a stroke with what you were saying in the days and weeks after? How do you square those two?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI know we\u2019re going into another event, or we have two more to do, and I\u2019m, my mind is racing,\u201d Jill Biden said. \u201cWhat do I say to him? What do I say to him? I\u2019m his wife, I\u2019ve got to lift him up. So, we go to the next event and I\u2019m thinking, \u2018What do I say that will lift him up that is true?\u2019 I want to say the things that are true. And so I said, you know, \u2018You answered every question.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat\u2019s a pretty low bar,\u201d Melvin shot back.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She later added, \u201cI mean, I\u2019m his wife. I\u2019m not going to get out on the stage there and say, \u2018Joe, you really screwed that up.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since losing the 2024 election, Democrats have been vexed by the octogenarian former president\u2019s decision to run for reelection, his reluctance to stand down after a debate performance so poor that it raised questions within his own party about his fitness for office, and leaving former Vice President Kamala Harris just 107 days, which became the title of her memoir, to campaign as his replacement. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This triggered a wider discussion of whether Biden was really up to the job of being president while he was serving, much less until he would have been 86 years old at the end of a second term, and how much of the media missed that story at the time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The media has been less forgiving of Jill Biden as she relives that experience in her book and generates off-message headlines during what is expected to be a good midterm election year for Democrats. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe most charitable interpretation of Jill Biden\u2019s book, particularly the parts dealing with her husband\u2019s aging, is that she\u2019s having difficulty accepting what\u2019s been happening to him for years,\u201d CNN\u2019s Jake Tapper <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/06\/02\/politics\/jill-biden-book-jake-tapper\">wrote <\/a>in a scathing review. \u201cThe less forgiving version is that she\u2019s been enabling it and is now seeking to try to find an excuse for what we all saw, while also suggesting here and there that there\u2019s much more than maybe even she\u2019s willing to admit to herself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether Jill Biden enabled her husband has been the subtext of the tough questions she has faced on the interview circuit, though she has repeatedly maintained it was her husband\u2019s decision to run again. Her answers have seldom reassured critics. She has been unable to convincingly answer questions about how he would have handled meetings with foreign leaders or a second term, often repeating that the medical consensus was that he was in good enough shape in the summer of 2024. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No answer has been more devastating than her \u201cstroke\u201d comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI don\u2019t know what happened,\u201d she told CBS News<em> Sunday Morning <\/em>last month. \u201cAs I watched it, I thought, \u2018Oh, my God, he\u2019s having a stroke.\u2019 And it scared me to death.\u201d She later disclosed to NPR that her husband was \u201cchecked\u201d by doctors afterward.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe got off the stage,\u201d Jill Biden said. \u201cI went to get my stuff. He went with his group, and then we met up in the car, and then the doctors, you know, checked him out and said, \u2018Oh, he\u2019s fine.\u201d\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/premium\/4585940\/biden-just-wont-go-away\/\"><strong>BIDEN JUST WON\u2019T GO AWAY<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All this raises the question of why there was even any discussion of Biden continuing his reelection campaign after the fact.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the Democrats\u2019 <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/daily-memo\/4579662\/dnc-autopsy-did-democrats-really-want-to-know\/\">real 2024 autopsy<\/a>.
