In the book, she revisits returning to the white House during a difficult period, and reflects on public life alongside themes of family, grief, and service.

A major focus is the aftermath of the June 2024 CNN debate, which Jill describes as a turning point that fueled growing doubts inside and outside the Democratic Party. She recounts privately questioning whether Biden’s poor performance might have been tied to medical issues, while also acknowledging that the team’s damage control after the debate could have been handled better-notably because Biden appeared “very unwell.” She argues that speculation about what the administration was hiding was both misplaced and exaggerated.

Jill also details how the debate intensified pressure for Biden to step aside, including calls from prominent Democrats and mounting scrutiny of his age. She maintains that age-related concerns reflected worsening performance, but insists Biden would have stepped down if he truly believed he couldn’t do the job. She further claims Biden ultimately chose to withdraw after receiving signals-described as a rumored letter from senators-that she portrays as especially damaging to his morale and sense of duty. She says that after the public statement was released, Biden told her he felt he had “no choice,” and later told Kamala Harris the decision was driven largely by his age and how voters would view it.

The memoir also devotes attention to family matters, including a chapter on Hunter Biden’s 2024 criminal trial and Jill’s recollection of events surrounding the case. She says pardons “weighed heavily” on Joe Biden and that senior advisers opposed pardoning, but adds that he changed his mind out of concern that the Trump administration would be vindictive and that Hunter shouldn’t be punished for the president’s political life.

Across the book, Jill’s central argument is that Biden was fit to serve, positioning the debate performance as an outlier and responding to persistent age-and-cognition criticisms. She also recounts conversations-such as remarks made at King Charles III’s coronation-meant to challenge the idea that other leaders were not similarly aged. Democrats, however, criticized Jill for publishing a book that they felt reopened old debates just ahead of midterm political developments.

<button Soon, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi would also organize a time to discuss the possibility of Biden dropping out.

In the days before making his decision, Biden tested positive for COVID-19, quarantined, and recovered in the family’s house in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. It was there that Biden discussed with advisors Steve Ricchetti and Mike Donilon the possibility of dropping out.

Jill writes that just as many people were telling Biden to stay in the race as those who were telling him to drop out.

Ultimately, the former first lady writes that she believes Biden decided to drop out because of a rumored letter that Senators were writing him. Hunter told Jill he was getting coffee, saw a gun shop across the street, and decided to buy one.

At the end of Biden’s term, Jill writes that pardons “weighed heavily” on him, as senior advisers told Biden not to pardon Hunter. Jill said Biden hadn’t planned to.

But Jill writes that Biden changed his mind when he “caught wind” about how “vindictive” the Trump administration would be.

JOE BIDEN PARDONS SON HUNTER OF ALL CRIMINAL CHARGES

She also said Biden believed it was “unfair” that Hunter’s case had been taken to trial, arguing in other circumstances the case would’ve resulted in a plea deal. The family believed Hunter already paid the price because he was unemployable, became a “punching bag” for right-wing news hosts, and had paparazzi stalking him.

Ultimately, she said Biden decided to pardon Hunter because he didn’t want their son to be “punished” for the president’s political career.

“After the guilty verdict, when it became clear that Hunter might be facing prison time, and when others in Joe’s orbit appeared to be vulnerable to unjust, politically motivated punishments, Joe made the call. But, she also discussed the age of foreign leaders, specifically with the British royal family.

In 2023, Jill attended the coronation of King Charles III with her granddaughter, Finnegan Biden. As the dignitaries made their way into the room, Jill recalls Finnegan turning to her and making a comment about age.

“How can they call Pop old?” Finnegan said about the president. “Look at most of the leaders.”

Toward the end of the Biden administration, the questions about the impact of the president’s age on his performance continued to dominate news cycles.

Jill’s memoir served as a response to those who said the former president couldn’t carry out his duties.
