It further claims that consequences for doctors who stray from MAID requirements appear minimal, citing a report that notes hundreds of possible criminal violations of MAID laws since 2016 but says none were referred to law enforcement. It contrasts this lack of serious action with stricter penalties for other types of misconduct (such as aggressive driving or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/raw-milk-what-to-know-about-pasteurization-and-bird-flu\/\" title=\"Understanding Pasteurization and Avian Influenza in Raw Milk\">selling raw milk<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The piece also discusses broader concerns that MAID has been normalized and \u201ctrivialized,\u201d quotes a <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >health policy professor endorsing<\/a> that criticism, and points to the increasing number of MAID deaths. It warns that MAID\u2019s scope is set to expand to mental illness as of March 2027 and implies that without stronger oversight and accountability, MAID could become socially routine-\u201cdeath and donuts\u201d on every corner-ending up treated like a standard service rather than a grave, tightly regulated act.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The double-double is a quintessential coffee order in the Great North. Every morning, Canadians go through the drive-thru at Tim Hortons, the\u00a0coffee shop on\u00a0virtually every\u00a0street, and order it. Two\u00a0creams,\u00a0two sugars. <\/p>\n<p>But\u00a0there\u2019s\u00a0a new double-double up North: death and donuts.\u00a0The\u00a0National Post\u00a0reported <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/news\/ontario-man-dies-of-maid-after-being-assessed-outside-tim-hortons\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this week <\/a>that a London, Ontario doctor provided a euthanasia assessment outside a Tim Hortons then drove the patient (who suffered\u00a0from inflammatory bowel disease and a history of mental health issues) to the facility where a doctor ended his life. <\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0National Post <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/news\/ontario-man-dies-of-maid-after-being-assessed-outside-tim-hortons\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">also reported<\/a> that the same doctor, James MacLean,\u00a0breached protocols when he\u00a0failed to\u00a0give one of the three drugs used in the cocktail that ends\u00a0patients\u2019 lives. MacLean\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0bring the\u00a0neuromuscular-blocking drug with him that paralyzes\u00a0the body\u00a0\u2014\u00a0including the muscles used to breathe. \u201cThe patient resumed spontaneously breathing again after initially being pronounced dead, and after MacLean had already left the home.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p>This story strikes close to home, quite literally.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0not\u00a0solely\u00a0because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.andrewkooman.com\/p\/grieving-after-maid-thoughts-for?utm_source=publication-search\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">I\u2019ve lost family members<\/a> to medical\u00a0assistance\u00a0in dying (MAID). Nor\u00a0is it\u00a0because\u00a0doctors have offered MAID to\u00a0members of my\u00a0community\u00a0who\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0request it\u00a0and now fear the health centers meant to give them care.  <\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0reason\u00a0the revelation of these\u00a0horrors strikes so close to home is because\u00a0MacLean\u00a0practices at the same clinic as my family physician. My own child has been treated by him at a walk-in clinic. Friends and family, including myself, receive primary care in the very location where he continues to work.  <\/p>\n<p>This\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0a distant scandal.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0happening where my loved ones seek health and healing, people who could be one coffee or car ride away from an encounter with death.  <\/p>\n<p>The message, if there is one, from the Canadian health system to patients seems to be: deal with it. MacLean has been given less than\u00a0a slap on the wrist.  <\/p>\n<p>What are other doctors who assess and administer\u00a0MAID\u00a0up to?  <\/p>\n<p>Restaurants receive more consequences over spoiled food or health and safety policy violations than doctors in Canada receive for ending the lives of patients under questionable circumstances.   <\/p>\n<p>Ontario has harsher penalties for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontario.ca\/page\/speeding-and-aggressive-driving\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">aggressive speeding<\/a> (30-day license revocation), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontario.ca\/laws\/statute\/97f41\/v9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">exterminating bats<\/a> ($10,000 fine), and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canlii.org\/en\/on\/laws\/stat\/rso-1990-c-m12\/latest\/rso-1990-c-m12.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">selling raw milk<\/a> ($10,000 fine\u00a0and\u00a0six months in jail for second offenders) than for doctors who stray outside\u00a0the expansive MAID laws to end a human life. <\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenewatlantis.com\/publications\/compliance-problems-maid-canada-leaked-documents\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent report<\/a> revealed that Ontario Premier Doug Ford\u2019s\u00a0chief\u00a0coroner has noted 428 possible criminal violations of MAID laws since Ontario physicians and nurse practitioners started to administer euthanasia in 2016. Yet\u00a0not a single one\u00a0has been referred to law enforcement.  <\/p>\n<p>Here, a doctor like MacLean\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0even sanctioned, simply supervised, and continues to practice life-ending assessments and procedures. <\/p>\n<p>Trudo Lemmens\u00a0is\u00a0a professor\u00a0in health policy\u00a0at the University of Toronto,\u00a0a\u00a0member of the Advisory Committee on Health Research of the Pan American Health\u00a0Organization,\u00a0and served as a member of two expert panels of the Council of Canadian Academies, including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scienceadvice.ca\/en\/assessments\/in-progress\/medical-assistance-dying\/expert-panel.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">one for advance requests <\/a>of\u00a0MAID. He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/trudo-lemmens-59384918_euthanasia-maid-ugcPost-7465062997879648257-509Q\/?utm_source=share&#038;utm_medium=member_desktop&#038;rcm=ACoAABT8rlIBJU6DWrBs6guG3EEHr9Q-pD1ekN4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">publicly noted<\/a> astonishment at the flaccid response of MAID\u00a0overseers\u00a0to MacLean\u2019s reported behavior.  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf someone would have said 10 years ago this would happen, I also would have thought this to be unlikely\u2026. [The] level of ideological zeal we are\u00a0witnessing\u00a0here\u2026reveals in my view one of the most pernicious and far-reaching results of our legalized MAID regime: the trivialization of the seriousness of doctors ending the lives of patients,\u201d\u00a0he said. <\/p>\n<p>Since MAID\u00a0changed from murder to mandated health\u00a0care in 2016, more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/health-canada\/services\/publications\/health-system-services\/annual-report-medical-assistance-dying-2024.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">76,475<\/a> Canadians have died at the hands of doctors and nurses. The number continues to climb, yet the standards of care keep falling. And MAID is still in its infancy in Canada. Come March 2027, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gc.ca\/eng\/cj-jp\/ad-am\/bk-di.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">it will expand<\/a> to mental illness as a sole qualifying condition\u00a0\u2014\u00a0a policy the Liberal government\u00a0remains\u00a0determined to implement despite widespread warnings of inevitable moral catastrophe.  <\/p>\n<p>If Canadians do not demand serious oversight, accountability, and a change in trajectory, the new double-double will become as ubiquitous as Tim Hortons itself: death and donuts available on every street corner, normalized, trivialized, and served with a smile.
