The piece claims this reflects a broader shift in education: as AI tools and weaker or more easily gamed coursework become common, cheating has moved from occasional rule-breaking to an achievable, low-risk system that lets students earn credit without actually learning.<\/p>\n<p>It highlights concerns that digital testing and test-prep strategies have weakened the ability of exams like the SAT to reveal real skill, while AP programs are undermined through dual-credit alternatives that may lack standardized end-of-course assessments. The author argues this creates incentives for lighter workloads, fewer deterrents against academic dishonesty, and inflated grades that parents and schools often notice more than learning. The long-term warning is that even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/elite-san-francisco-school-nixes-merit-based-admission\/\" title=\"Elite San Francisco ... Nixes Merit...Based Admission\">high-achieving students<\/a> may graduate functionally unprepared-more skilled at manipulation and less capable of reading,writing,and <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >quantitative reasoning-leaving schools<\/a> and families responsible to demand \u201csomething real\u201d rather than hollow credentials.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>It\u2019s graduation season. At ceremonies across the country, valedictorians, salutatorians, student council presidents, and school administrators are giving speeches to commend millions of high school graduates on their good work, encourage them to savor this moment of achievement, and go forth in a spirit of gratitude and pride.<\/p>\n<p>Typically, these speeches rarely stray from pre-approved messages stressing inclusion, positivity, and general affirmations. After going through the gauntlet of censors, what mostly comes out is nearly always some mix of platitudes about seizing opportunities, enjoying the journey, and persevering through adversity. Nevertheless, in past years, the speeches still expressed the students\u2019 own voice on some level \u2014 and I would know since I was usually the one teaching them how to write.<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, we can now have little confidence that we are hearing the student\u2019s voice rather than the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/OntarioGrade12s\/comments\/1lcz116\/school_is_forcing_me_to_use_ai_valedictorian\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hollow, generic drone of ChatGPT<\/a>. There have been a few <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/jeremy-scott-fashion-graduation-speech-commencement-ai-student-backlash-2026-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">prominent<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/nebraska.tv\/news\/local\/former-gish-student-criticizes-school-in-graduation-speech\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">examples<\/a> of speakers beginning with AI-composed speeches and then reverting to their own poignant comments, but now even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Teachers\/comments\/1tgsra1\/our_superintendent_used_ai_to_write_their_speech\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">superintendents<\/a> reportedly deliver interchangeable AI slop that means absolutely nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, most people might excuse this development, seeing that these speeches were mostly pointless formalities anyway. But what if empty canned speeches written by a machine really do reflect the mind (or mindlessness) of the person giving the speech? What if the use of AI for making speeches and for other tasks reveals that many of today\u2019s top students are really dishonest frauds?<\/p>\n<p>While cheating has always existed, particularly among elite students jockeying for rank, this problem has exploded in recent years, not only with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edtechinnovationhub.com\/news\/study-finds-4-in-5-students-use-ai-for-schoolwork-with-arkansas-and-mississippi-leading-adoption?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rise of AI<\/a>, but with the increasing popularity of inferior educational programs that effectively facilitate academic dishonesty. Whereas unscrupulous students in the past cheated on various assessments, they usually had enough intelligence to avoid detection and feign mastery. Today\u2019s cheaters lack even this much initiative. They now simply ask AI to complete the assignment and submit their work \u2014 it obviously helps that <a href=\"https:\/\/thejournal.com\/articles\/2023\/02\/15\/shifting-from-paper-to-cloud-how-schools-are-digitizing-operations.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">many schools have gone paperless<\/a> after the Covid shutdowns.<\/p>\n<p>It is now possible for otherwise mediocre students to make their way through advanced courses, cheating the whole time. Worse still, they can continue this way in their college courses, where their professors may take even less action against academic dishonesty than teachers at K-12 schools. Sure, some professors might take to the pages of The Atlantic and complain about their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/magazine\/archive\/2024\/11\/the-elite-college-students-who-cant-read-books\/679945\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">elite students who never read a whole book in their lives<\/a>, but many will never seriously challenge these students, <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/opinion\/education\/4444824-no-more-d-or-f-grades-grade-inflation-is-masking-a-looming-crisis-of-ignorance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">much less fail them<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Not so long ago, such chronic cheaters were unmasked when they took their SAT or AP exams, but this has changed. The SATs are <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/03\/06\/us-news\/fully-digital-sats-new-adaptive-sections-dumb-down-college-admissions-test\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">continually altered<\/a> to accommodate ever weaker testers, hiding how much <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/education\/u-s-high-school-students-continue-to-lose-ground-in-math-and-reading-as-yearslong-decline-persists\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">decline in learning<\/a> has set in. Moreover, students can learn to game the test and earn a respectable score by taking a 6-week course at a test prep center down the street.<\/p>\n<p>In the case of AP exams, many students are actively circumventing them by enrolling in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/improving-ap-courses-starts-with-destroying-the-college-board\/\" title=\"Improving AP Courses Starts With Destroying The College Board\">dual-credit programs<\/a> (community college courses offered at the high school level), which have no standardized exam at the end of the course. In response, College Board has made its exams <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joannejacobs.com\/post\/up-up-and-away-recalibration-is-raising-ap-exam-scores\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">easier to pass<\/a>, but this won\u2019t be enough.<\/p>\n<p>Although this may seem like a small policy change, this undermining of AP programs at public schools through misguided incentives will have massive consequences for incoming college freshmen, along with kids ready to do full-time work. Our best and brightest are now wasting their formative years in classes not designed for them.<\/p>\n<p>In AP courses, students are forced to work hard every day in order to have the knowledge, skills, and intellectual stamina to pass their exams. By contrast, in dual-credit classes, because there is no standardized exam and because the adjunct professors are paid a small pittance to teach the class, the workload is often laughably light, and there is essentially zero deterrence for cheating. <\/p>\n<p>This means that students can sleep through instruction, submit AI-generated work for the handful of assignments they have, and somehow finish the semester with college credit and a perfect grade for the class. Sure, this credit and grade are worthless since the student didn\u2019t actually learn anything or do any work, but schools will pretend this isn\u2019t the case and parents are only looking at the grades. In the short term, everyone (except the AP teachers who no longer have any students) wins.<\/p>\n<p>In the long term, everyone loses (still including the AP teachers who warned about this) since even the top graduates who have ostensibly earned so many college credits are functionally illiterate, innumerate, and generally ignorant about everything. The only thing that distinguishes them from their lower-ranked classmates is their greater willingness to cheat and lie about their work. These seeming luminaries will now depend on AI to do everything for them, and none of their teachers or professors will stop them, let alone call it out, because it would break the illusion that their school is preparing students for the challenges of the world beyond.<\/p>\n<p>This leaves it up to parents and school boards to speak up and demand something better, something real, before it\u2019s too late. Otherwise, they can expect their children\u2019s diplomas and future prospects to be as hollow and meaningless as the speeches given at their graduation ceremony.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>      Auguste Meyrat is an English teacher and freelance writer in the Dallas area.
