After publishing an error-filled 2024 election autopsy intended to explain why Democrats underperformed, the outlet contacted more than 50 current or potential party leaders to ask whether they back Martin. By the end of the week, only three had responded, and just one elected official’s spokesman-Marie Gluesenkamp Perez-replied with anything substantial, offering that they “don’t have anything” to provide.

The paper also reached out to lawmakers in competitive midterm races and to figures widely speculated to run for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028, including governors, senators, and prominent former officials. Some inquiries were redirected to political teams or deferred, but much of the response remained silent. The lack of engagement reflects broader Democratic frustration with the autopsy report, which critics say was incomplete and contained spelling mistakes, factual errors, and distancing language about a strategist associated with drafting it.

Martin had promised transparency about the autopsy after taking over the chairmanship last february, but later reneged and faced additional criticism from prominent Democrats. After growing pressure, he released the report only after it drew sustained media attention, defending the decision as unedited and meant to restore trust-though it has still been criticized for failing to address key issues Democrats faced in 2024, such as inflation/economy concerns, the israel-Hamas war and Gaza policy, and perceptions around Joe Biden’s age, while also distracting from messaging ahead of the fall campaign.

The report argues these controversies are intensifying doubts about Martin’s leadership as republicans and allied groups continue to outraise Democrats. It notes that Martin could possibly be removed via a no-confidence vote requiring meaningful DNC support, or through pressure from senior Democrats, and includes comments suggesting some party members doubt he will last much longer in the role.

Democrats are apparently in no rush to defend embattled Democratic National Committee Chairman Ken Martin.

After the publication of an error-ridden 2024 election autopsy, a report that was supposed to explain why Democrats so dramatically underperformed that presidential cycle, the Washington Examiner reached out to more than 50 elected or formally elected party members last week to ascertain their support for Martin.

Recommended Stories

Beshear touts Southern Democratic revival as party searches for 2028 message

What to know about Iowa’s primary elections as Democrats try to mount a comeback

New Jersey’s Tom Kean hasn’t voted in Congress since March.
