Trump also dropped two other claims: one tied to the FBI\u2019s 2022 raid on his Mar-a-Lago home and another alleging past government \u201cweaponization\u201d involving Obama and the spread of the Russia-collusion narrative.<\/p>\n<p>The parties agreed to settle without monetary damages, and Trump and other plaintiffs (including his sons donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump) will receive formal apologies. As part of that settlement,the U.S.Department of Justice will create an approximately $2 billion \u201cAnti-Weaponization Fund\u201d (initially funded with $1.776 billion) intended to compensate victims of alleged lawfare and government \u201cweaponization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The DOJ says a committee of five will review claims and determine compensation over the next 30 days, with the DOJ retaining audit authority and issuing quarterly reports. The move has prompted criticism and questions from both Republicans and Democrats about the fund\u2019s purpose and whether it could benefit Trump, his family, or donors. Democrats also pressed for clarification on whether people involved in the January 6 events or other illegal conduct could qualify, with DOJ officials stating that any American may apply but commissioners will decide who receives compensation. Defendants failed to take such mandatory precautions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The media outlets to whom Littlejohn provided Trump\u2019s tax documents, including The New York Times and Pro-publica, subsequently accused the president of having committed \u201cfraud\u201d and \u201cmisconduct.\u201d The IRS\u2019s failure to prevent the leak, Trump argued in the lawsuit, has \u201ccaused Plaintiffs reputational and financial harm, public embarrassment, unfairly tarnished their business reputations, portrayed them in a false light, and negatively affected President Trump, and the other Plaintiffs\u2019 public standing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump is also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/media\/1441201\/dl?inline\">dropping<\/a> two other claims for relief, one centered on the Federal Bureau of Investigation\u2019s (FBI\u2019s) 2022 raid on Trump\u2019s Florida residence at Mar-a-Lago and one centered on former president Barack Obama\u2019s weaponization of federal intelligence agencies to proliferate the Russian collusion hoax. The instances of lawfare and government weaponization in those complaints, Trump asserted, are \u201crepresentative of the sustained use of the levers of government power by Democrat elected officials, political and career federal employees, contractors, and agents in order to target individuals, groups, and entities for improper and unlawful political, personal, and\/or ideological reasons.\u201d He continued, \u201cOther well-known examples of Lawfare and Weaponization include the Biden Administration\u2019s abuse of the FACE Act, the Biden Administration\u2019s wrongful labeling of certain parents as domestic terrorists, and the IRS\u2019s targeting of groups based on improper ideological criteria.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, Trump agreed to settle the cases without receiving monetary damages. He will, however, receive a formal apology, as will other plaintiffs, including his sons Donald Trump, Jr. and Eric Trump. The settlement also stipulates the creation of a nearly-$2 billion \u201cAnti-Weaponization Fund\u201d to compensate those who have similarly been harmed by federal government weaponization. Trump\u2019s claims were dismissed \u201cwith prejudice,\u201d so that he cannot file lawsuits on the same issue again in the future.<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Justice (DOJ) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/justice-department-announces-anti-weaponization-fund\">confirmed<\/a> the creation of the Anti-Weaponization Fund in a press release Monday. \u201cThe machinery of government should never be weaponized against any American, and it is this Department\u2019s intention to make right the wrongs that were previously done while ensuring this never happens again,\u201d said Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche in a statement. \u201cAs part of this settlement, we are setting up a lawful process for victims of lawfare and weaponization to be heard and seek redress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Anti-Weaponization Fund has been provided with $1.776 billion. Within the next 30 days, Blanche will establish a committee of five to manage the fund, review victims\u2019 claims of weaponization, and agree on compensation, while the Attorney General maintains the authority to audit the fund at any time. Reports will be sent to the DOJ on a quarterly basis detailing claims and compensation.<\/p>\n<p>The Biden administration intentionally weaponized the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act to aggressively prosecute pro-life Americans, illegally targeted and spied on traditionalist Catholics, labeled parents opposed to transgender school policies as domestic terrorists, unjustly investigated Christian non-profits, fined Christian universities excessive sums, repeatedly <a href=\"http:\/\/judiciary.house.gov\/media\/press-releases\/weaponization-committee-exposes-biden-white-house-censorship-regime-new-report\">pressured<\/a> major social media outlets to censor conservative figures and publications, and arrested more than 1,000 January 6 protestors, including those who were involved in peaceful protest. While the FBI and Secret Service <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/news\/us\/exclusive-classified-documents-reveal-the-number-of-january-6-protestors\/ar-AAS5k77\">estimated<\/a> that roughly 1,200 people entered the U.S. Capitol Building on January 6, 2021, nearly <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2025\/01\/05\/politics\/trump-january-6-capitol-rioters\/index.html\">1,600<\/a> arrests were made.<\/p>\n<p>Although Congress will have an opportunity to recommend and approve at least one commissioner of the fund, both Republicans and Democrats have already questioned the necessity of compensating Americans who were unjustly or illegally targeted by the Biden administration. According to Politico Senate reporter Jordain Casey, Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/jordainc\/status\/2056740932993659197\">said<\/a> that he is \u201cnot a big fan\u201d of the Anti-Weaponization Fund and does not \u201csee a purpose for that.\u201d He also <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/burgessev\/status\/2056747339365200371\">suggested<\/a> that Congress is likely to scrutinize the fund \u201cbased on some of the blowback that\u2019s come since this was announced\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Democrats in particular have been quick to question the purpose and mechanisms of the fund. In a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing Tuesday, Democrats grilled Blanche on the Anti-Weaponization Fund. \u201cHas it ever happened that a sitting president sued his own government for $10 billion and then directed the settlement of the case and the establishment of a payout fund?\u201d Senator Chris Coons (D-Del.) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/cspan\/status\/2056746334594494880\">asked<\/a>, pressing Blanche to commit that none of the money in the fund would be paid to Trump, his family, or his campaign donors. Focusing on the January 6 protests, Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/cspan\/status\/2056743696373084443\">asked<\/a> if \u201cindividuals who assaulted Capitol Police officers be eligible\u201d to receive payments under the fund. Blanche emphasized that any American is eligible to apply for <em>compensation<\/em> under the fund, but that it will be up to the fund\u2019s commissioners to determine who actually <em>receives<\/em> compensation.<\/p>\n<p>In his memo announcing the establishment of the Anti-Weaponization Fund, Blanche noted that the creation of such funds is not \u201cunprecedented,\u201d as many Democrats subsequently claimed. Instead, Blanche pointed to the case of Keepseagle v. Vilsack under the Obama administration, in which a federal fund was established to provide compensation to alleged victims of racism. Blanche sparred with Van Hollen Tuesday over the significance of differences between the Keepseagle fund and the Anti-Weaponization Fund. \u201cYou compared this to the Keepseagle case, but I think you know full well that in that case, the settlement agreement was approved by a federal judge, including the payments to people who were not originally parties to the lawsuit,\u201d Van Hollen said, adding, \u201cSo that\u2019s a big difference between this case and the case that you compared it to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, it\u2019s not,\u201d Blanche retorted. \u201cYour question was whether it\u2019s a big difference. It\u2019s not.\u201d When Van Hollen insisted that a federal judge\u2019s approval of the Keepseagle settlement meant that the fund would be operated in an \u201cindependent,\u201d as opposed to a partisan manner, Blanche noted that the Keepseagle fund had one commissioner and that the judge \u201chad nothing to do with deciding\u201d who was compensated. \u201cSo you\u2019re not going to submit this proposal to any federal judge or \u2026 any independent authority?\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/cspan\/status\/2056763302664094096?s=20\">asked<\/a> Van Hollen. \u201cThere is no judge,\u201d Blanche responded, exasperated. He noted that Judge Kathleen Williams of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida, where Trump initially brought the lawsuit, had already dismissed the case. \u201cWhat do you mean \u2018an independent authority?\u2019\u201d the acting attorney general asked, rejecting Van Hollen\u2019s assertions that he was incapable of serving as the head of the DOJ due to his previous role as Trump\u2019s personal lawyer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is unusual, that is true, but it is not unprecedented,\u201d Blanche <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/cspan\/status\/2056743544547901939\">said<\/a> in defense of the Anti-Weaponization Fund. \u201cIt was done to address something that had never happened [before] again either,\u201d he continued, noting that the fund was established \u201cin response to years and years of weaponization, just to correct a few things\u2026 It\u2019s not limited to Republicans, it\u2019s not limited to the Biden weaponization, it\u2019s not limited to \u2014 in any way, scope, or form \u2014 January 6 or to Jack Smith.
