Jean Carroll, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/05\/27\/politics\/exclusive-justice-department-launched-e-jean-carroll-investigation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CNN<\/a> exclusive published Wednesday, and corporate media rushed to decry the supposed \u201cweaponization\u201d of justice against the writer who accused President Donald Trump of sexual assault. Though the exact nature of the investigation remains uncertain, it\u2019s well worth revisiting the facts that undermine Carroll\u2019s half-baked anti-Trump hit job.<\/p>\n<p>CNN reported that the investigation is centered on whether Carroll committed perjury. Prosecutors, CNN said, are focusing on a deposition Carroll provided in 2022 in which she said she received no outside funding for her lawsuit. Despite her testimony, it turns out billionaire Democrat donor Reid Hoffman paid some of her legal fees and expenses.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Attorney Andrew Boutros said in a statement that the Northern District of Illinois \u201chas not opened \u2014 and has never opened \u2014 a criminal investigation into E. Jean Carroll,\u201d though CNN said its \u201csources reaffirmed the investigation to CNN.\u201d A source <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2026\/05\/28\/doj-e-jean-carroll-funding-reid-hoffman-review?utm_campaign=mrf-utm_campaign=editorial&#038;utm_source=x&#038;utm_medium=owned_social&#038;utm_source=twitter&#038;utm_medium=social&#038;mrfcid=202605286a0d31c210b9ce03fa6ac80d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a> Axios that the DOJ is actually investigating the Hoffman nonprofit organization that paid some of Carroll\u2019s legal fees, and that Carroll \u201cis not the subject of the investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whether this reported investigation goes anywhere remains to be seen. But it <em>does<\/em> remind Americans just how deeply flawed and politically charged the entire case was from the very beginning. <\/p>\n<p>Carroll accused Trump of raping her in a Bergdorf Goodman and then sued him for defamation when he denied it in 2019. Carroll notably declined to press criminal charges against Trump because, according to her, she \u201cwould find it <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/05\/09\/e-jean-carrolls-original-claims-about-trump-were-absurd-but-that-didnt-stop-the-media-from-amplifying-them\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">disrespectful<\/a> to the women who are down on the border who are being raped around the clock.\u201d Carroll then filed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/timeline-e-jean-carroll-legal-battles-with-donald-trump-doj-investigation-12002524\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">second lawsuit in 2022<\/a> after the state of New York <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/sexual-abuse-lawsuits-new-york-6fd16aa4cc992c089e91c6fef064f375\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">temporarily<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kcra.com\/article\/e-jean-carroll-trump-legal-battle\/71443238\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">changed<\/a> a statute of limitations law.<\/p>\n<p>That was only one of many suspect aspects of the crusade against Trump.<\/p>\n<h2>Suit Was Bankrolled by Dem Mega Donor<\/h2>\n<p>The funding for Carroll\u2019s lawsuit seems to be at the heart of the DOJ\u2019s alleged investigation \u2014 even though, as CNN <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/05\/27\/politics\/exclusive-justice-department-launched-e-jean-carroll-investigation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>, Carroll once testified that she received no outside funding for her lawsuit.<\/p>\n<p>In fact Carroll\u2019s lawsuit wasn\u2019t merely a private legal dispute; it was part of a <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >broader political effort backed<\/a> by a Democrat billionaire. Hoffman helped <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/04\/13\/nyregion\/trump-carroll-lawsuit-hoffman-linkedin.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bankroll Carroll\u2019s suit <\/a>against Trump, according to The New York Times (which cited court documents), while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/anafaguy\/2023\/05\/10\/what-was-reid-hoffmans-role-in-funding-e-jean-carrolls-case\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Forbes reported<\/a> that the Hoffman-backed nonprofit American Future Republic provided funding for the suit. Hoffman <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/07\/09\/dem-donor-who-funded-election-disinfo-lawfare-is-backing-lawsuit-to-silence-election-journalism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">has helped fund lawsuits<\/a> against Fox News and Newsmax, as well as a false information campaign that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/12\/19\/us\/alabama-senate-roy-jones-russia.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">used<\/a> \u201cRussian tactics\u201d to try and hurt a Republican candidate for U.S. Senate.<\/p>\n<h2>Carroll Could Not Identify When the Alleged Incident Occurred<\/h2>\n<p>Carroll alleged the incident took place at Bergdof Goodman \u201c23 years ago,\u201d according to an excerpt from her book <em>What Do We Need Men For?<\/em> published in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecut.com\/article\/donald-trump-assault-e-jean-carroll-other-hideous-men.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Cut<\/a> in 2019. That would place the alleged incident around 1996. New York <a href=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/2019\/06\/president-donald-trump-faces-new-rape-accusation.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Magazine also reported<\/a> that \u201cCarroll places the ensuing incident in late 1995 or early 1996.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In other words, Carroll couldn\u2019t give any specifics on when the alleged incident occurred. Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysd.uscourts.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2023-01\/Carroll%20II%20DI%2038%20Opinion.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">himself pointed this out<\/a>, saying: \u201cShe has no idea what day, what week, what month, what year\u201d the alleged incident occurred. Trump\u2019s lawyer Joe Tacopina <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iowapublicradio.org\/news-from-npr\/news-from-npr\/2023-05-09\/a-jury-finds-trump-liable-for-battery-and-defamation-in-e-jean-carroll-trial\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">argued<\/a>, \u201cGive me a date. \u2026 There\u2019s calendars. There\u2019s schedules. \u2026 We could see where he was. But of course, with no date, no month, no year, can\u2019t present an alibi. Can\u2019t call witnesses.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Emails Show Carroll Told Friends About Grand Scheme to Get Trump Out of Office<\/h2>\n<p>In an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/trump-lawyer-asks-e-jean-carroll-about-scheming-with-friend-2023-4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">email<\/a> to Carroll from September 2017 \u2014 nearly two years before she went public with her allegations \u2014 her friend Carol Martin wrote: \u201cThis has to stop. As soon as we\u2019re both well enough to scheme, we must do our patriotic duty again,\u201d with a link to a New Yorker column mocking Trump.<\/p>\n<p>Carroll responded, \u201cTOTALLY!!! I have something special for you when we meet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The email exchange happened just two weeks before Carroll began working on the book in which she publicly accused the president of rape, according to Business Insider.<\/p>\n<h2>Statute of Limitations Changed\/New Law<\/h2>\n<p>In 2022 Carroll <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysd.uscourts.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2023-01\/Carroll%20II%20DI%2038%20Opinion.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">filed<\/a> a second lawsuit literally minutes after New York\u2019s Adult Survivors Act went into effect \u2014 for just one year. The law permitted adult survivors of sexual assault to file <a href=\"https:\/\/www.governor.ny.gov\/news\/governor-hochul-signs-adult-survivors-act\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">civil suits<\/a> for alleged sexual assault no matter how long ago the incident happened, even if the normal statute of limitations had previously expired (as was the case with the actions of which  Trump was accused). Carroll sued Trump for battery under the new law, plus more defamation. Carroll <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.com\/US\/jury-deliberations-underway-jean-carroll-battery-defamation-case\/story?id=99183870\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">received<\/a> a $5 million verdict for sexual abuse (not rape) and defamation.<\/p>\n<h2>Trump Was Held Liable for Denying the Allegation<\/h2>\n<p>Ultimately, Trump was held liable for merely denying the allegation. After Carroll\u2019s allegations went public in 2019, Trump released a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.govinfo.gov\/content\/pkg\/DCPD-201900410\/pdf\/DCPD-201900410.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">statement<\/a> in which he categorically denied even meeting Carroll.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe is trying to sell a new book; that should indicate her motivation,\u201d Trump said. \u201cIt should be sold in the fiction section. Shame on those who make up false stories of assault to try to get publicity for themselves or sell a book or carry out a political agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a subsequent interview with The Hill, Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-48754959\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>, \u201cI\u2019ll say it with great respect: Number one, she\u2019s not my type. Number two, it never happened. It never happened, OK?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Judge Lewis Kaplan <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.com\/US\/jean-carroll-wins-partial-summary-judgment-original-2019\/story?id=102964172\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">issued<\/a> a partial summary judgment in the 2019 defamation case ruling that Trump was liable for defamation based on his 2019 statements. The ruling came after Carroll won her second case that accused Trump of battery (after New York State temporarily changed its laws) and additional defamation \u2014 in other words, additional denials from the president. While the jury did not find Trump raped Carroll, they found he sexually abused her and awarded her $5 million. Therefore, his comments denying the incident were considered defamation.<\/p>\n<p>To recap: A known anti-Trump Democrat mega-donor financed a lawsuit built on allegations by a woman who couldn\u2019t remember the year of the purported assault, and a state changed its laws to facilitate the lawfare \u2014 all to assassinate the character of a sitting president who was punished for maintaining his innocence.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>      Brianna Lyman is an elections correspondent at The Federalist.
