He said the claim is \u201ccategorically false.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rather, reporting indicates the DOJ is looking at who paid Carroll\u2019s legal bills in her civil lawsuits against Donald Trump, including whether funding came through a Chicago-based nonprofit run by Reid Hoffman (a major Democratic donor and LinkedIn co-founder). Carroll previously testified in 2022 that she was not receiving outside funding for her legal expenses, while the reports say American Future Republic helped cover those costs.<\/p>\n<p>It remains unclear whether another U.S.attorney\u2019s office is investigating Carroll. Jean Carroll matter in New York, the Chicago U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office can confirm that it has not opened \u2014 and has never opened \u2014 a criminal investigation into E. Jean Carroll,\u201d U.S. Attorney Andrew Boutros said. \u201cAny claim to the contrary is categorically false.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of Carroll herself, the DOJ is examining who paid the legal bills in her civil lawsuits against Trump as part of an investigation into a Chicago-based nonprofit run by Reid Hoffman that paid for some of her legal expenses, according to <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2026\/05\/28\/doj-e-jean-carroll-funding-reid-hoffman-review?utm_campaign=mrf-utm_campaign=editorial&#038;utm_source=x&#038;utm_medium=owned_social&#038;utm_source=twitter&#038;utm_medium=social&#038;mrfcid=202605286a0d31c210b9ce03fa6ac80d\">multiple<\/a> <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national-security\/2026\/05\/28\/doj-probes-reid-hoffmans-nonprofit-funding-e-jean-carrolls-legal-bills\/\">reports<\/a>. In Carroll\u2019s 2022 testimony, which was part of her civil lawsuit against Trump, she said she was not receiving outside funding for her legal expenses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Contrary to Carroll\u2019s testimony, American Future Republic helped pay her legal bills. Hoffman is a major Democratic Party donor and the co-founder of LinkedIn.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A source familiar with the DOJ\u2019s operations told <em>Axios<\/em> that Hoffman\u2019s nonprofit is at the center of the investigation, saying it\u2019s \u201crelated to E. Jean Carroll and her deposition\u201d but that \u201cshe is not the subject of the investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Carroll sued Trump twice, the first time for allegedly sexually assaulting her in the 1990s and the second time for allegedly defaming her in his denial of the alleged sexual assault incident.
