Jean Carroll, who accused President Donald Trump of sexual assault.The focus is whether Carroll committed perjury during a 2022 deposition, where she said she was not receiving outside money for her cases.<\/p>\n<p>carroll sued Trump twice; Trump denies her allegations.The investigation is tied to later-released records suggesting that billionaire LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman helped bankroll Carroll\u2019s legal efforts through a nonprofit. In october 2022, Trump attorney Alina Habba asked Carroll if anyone else was paying her legal fees, and Carroll answered \u201cNo.\u201d Trump\u2019s team argued that the \u201cNo\u201d was false onc Hoffman-linked funding came to light, while Carroll\u2019s side said she later recalled the additional funding handled by her counsel.<\/p>\n<p>The DOJ investigation is said to fall under the U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office for the Northern District of Illinois. Hoffman, a Democratic donor, made headlines for his financial ties to Carroll at the time due to Carroll\u2019s testimony that no one else was paying her legal fees for her.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In October 2022, Alina Habba, Trump\u2019s personal attorney in Carroll\u2019s second lawsuit, asked during a deposition, \u201cIs anyone else paying your legal fees, Ms. Carroll?\u201d Carroll subsequently responded, \u201cNo.\u201d Habba argued in a 2023 <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/storage.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.nysd.590045\/gov.uscourts.nysd.590045.108.0.pdf\">court filing<\/a>, once the contributions from Hoffman\u2019s nonprofit came to light, that Carroll \u201capparently perjured herself during her deposition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn short, Plaintiff apparently perjured herself during her deposition; her counsel sat by and allowed her to do so, knowing full well that her testimony was false; and then they conspired to conceal the truth for nearly six months, only to disclose it on the eve of trial,\u201d Habba argued after the Hoffman funding came to light in 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Carroll\u2019s counsel argued in response that \u201cCarroll recollected additional information\u201d relating to the deposition exchange with Habba.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe promptly disclosed to Trump\u2019s counsel that, while Carroll stands by her testimony about this being a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/conflicts-of-interest-facing-rfk-jr-ahead-of-senate-panel-grilling-washington-examiner\/\" title=\"Conflicts of interest facing RFK Jr. ahead of Senate panel grilling - Washington Examiner\">contingency fee case<\/a>, she now recalls that her counsel at some <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >point secured additional funding<\/a> from a nonprofit organization to cover certain expenses and fees,\u201d Carroll\u2019s lawyer, Roberta Kaplan, wrote in a 2023 <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/storage.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.nysd.590045\/gov.uscourts.nysd.590045.109.0.pdf\">filing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Representatives for Carroll did not respond to the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>\u2018s request for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An appeals court previously <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/rparloff\/status\/2059796126778155420?s=20\">found<\/a>, in relation to Carroll\u2019s testimony in question, that \u201cCarroll plausibly represented that she had forgotten about the limited outside funding counsel obtained in September 2020 when this question was first posed to her in 2022.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The DOJ\u2019s investigation into Carroll is reportedly under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office for the Northern District of Illinois, according to <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/justice-department-investigating-whether-trump-accuser-e-jean-carroll-committed-perjury\/\">CBS News<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/4565935\/appeals-court-spares-trump-paying-83-million-defamation-e-jean-carroll\/\">APPEALS COURT SPARES TRUMP FROM PAYING $83 MILLION DEFAMATION AWARD TO E. JEAN CARROLL \u2014 FOR NOW<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Regarding the lawsuits between Trump and Carroll, lower courts have found Trump liable, but Trump has appealed both decisions to the Supreme Court and is awaiting the court to take up the cases. In the first case, a jury found Trump liable for sexual assault and defamation and ordered him to pay Carroll $5 million.
