Richard Cash, a Republican, said at the time of the vote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The redistricting measure would have likely drawn the state\u2019s only Democratic congressman, Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-SC), out of his seat and shifted the state\u2019s congressional delegation to a 7-0 Republican margin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Republicans complained about the pace of the redistricting effort, compared to the last time around, when it took them nine months to create and install a new map.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have completely outsourced our constitutional obligation to prepare a congressional redistricting map to a consultant in Washington, D.C.,\u201d Republican state Sen. Tom Davis said. \u201cWe have no idea, no idea how that map was created.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lawmakers have effectively punted the decision on a new map until a legislative session after the primary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gov. <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/henry-mcmaster\/\">Henry McMaster<\/a> (R-SC) called the state legislature back for a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/congressional\/4567440\/south-carolina-redistricting-special-session-house-map\/\">special session<\/a> on May 14 to take up redistricting in the Palmetto State. McMaster\u2019s order for a special session came just days after the state Senate initially bucked another push from President Donald Trump for redistricting during the General Assembly\u2019s regular session.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That first push failed in the state Senate by a vote of 29-17, just <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/congressional\/4565459\/south-carolina-republican-redistricting-clyburn\/\">two votes short<\/a> of the two-thirds majority needed to pass the measure. This time around, more Republicans dissented to buck the redistricting measure, as early voting began on Tuesday ahead of the June 9 primaries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The crunched timeline between the Supreme Court\u2019s decision in <em>Louisiana v. Callais<\/em> and the start of the 2026 primary election season has caused difficulty for several southern states that have sought to redraw their lines following the decision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/4581727\/court-blocks-alabama-republicans-plan-instate-new-maps\/\"><strong>COURT BLOCKS ALABAMA REPUBLICANS\u2019 PLAN TO INSTATE NEW MAP<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed alignleft is-type-wp-embed is-provider-datawrapper wp-block-embed-datawrapper\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"> <iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" title=\"Alabama&apos;s congressional districts, 2023\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/shJIO\/1\/#?secret=TXmHm0wUyB\" data-secret=\"TXmHm0wUyB\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"746\"><\/iframe> <\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In neighboring Georgia, Gov. <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/brian-kemp\/\">Brian Kemp<\/a> (R-GA) called a special session to redraw the state\u2019s congressional map <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/state\/4567146\/kemp-calls-special-session-new-georgia-maps-2028\/\">for the 2028 elections<\/a>, punting the decision as the state\u2019s 2026 primaries were already underway.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump had urged South Carolina legislators to fall in line to support the state\u2019s redistricting measure ahead of the 2026 elections, asking them on Truth Social to \u201cBE BOLD AND COURAGEOUS\u201d and push their House primaries back to August, while leaving the rest of the state\u2019s elections on schedule as they were.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEverything will be fine,\u201d Trump <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/congressional\/4564944\/south-carolina-legislature-advance-redistricting-trump\/\">wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The loss is the second setback for Republicans on Tuesday, after a federal court ruled against new maps in Alabama, which would have redrawn one of the two Democratic-leaning districts.
