After publication, it was found that the cited document used the wrong units: liters per second were treated as the equivalent of cubic meters per hour, inflating the reported water usage by about a factor of 1,000. Hao publicly acknowledged the mistake in a social media thread and said she would correct it in future printings.

Supportive coverage from major outlets praised the book before discovering the error, and a third party later clarified that while the data center’s water use would still be high, it was closer to roughly the level of nearby Cerrillos (not the much larger figure Hao reported). The article also argues that this kind of oversight points to broader problems in journalism, including an over-reliance on echo chambers and a reduced ability to verify details from sources.

A journalist for The Atlantic made a claim in her latest book that was an exaggeration of artificial intelligence centers’ water use, and has since issued a public statement about the error.

In May 2025, Karen Hao published “Empire of AI: Dreams and Nightmares in Sam Altman’s OpenAI,” an exposé on the company and its apparent impacts on the environment and its workforce.

The book was viewed as a success among outlets like the Financial Times, who longlisted it for “Business Book of the Year Award” in 2025.
