Prosecutors claim he unlawfully registered by answering \u201cYes\u201d to being a U.S. citizen on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/leading-candidate-for-new-york-city-mayor-may-not-live-in-city-report-suggests\/\" title=\"Leading Candidate For New York City Mayor May Not Live In City, Report Suggests\">voter registration form<\/a>, and that he knowingly did not apply for citizenship despite later interactions with DHS paperwork.He could face up to five years in prison if convicted.<\/p>\n<p>It then places the case within a broader pattern of similar alleged noncitizen voting cases in other states, notes related enforcement or convictions mentioned elsewhere in massachusetts, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/new-jersey-residents-disturbed-by-mysterious-objects-appearing-in-the-sky-night-after-night\/\" title=\"New Jersey Residents Disturbed by Mysterious Objects Appearing in the Sky Night After Night\">highlights ongoing efforts<\/a> by some local officials and proposals to allow noncitizens to vote in local elections.The piece uses these examples to argue that stricter proof-of-citizenship requirements are necessary.<\/p>\n<p>it discusses President Donald Trump\u2019s SAVE America Act, which-according to the article-would require documentary proof of citizenship for voter registration and photo ID to vote, and criticizes Senate Democrats for blocking the legislation.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Another day, another foreign national charged with voting in U.S. elections \u2014 and yet another example of why failure to pass the <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/02\/16\/exclusive-chip-roy-lays-out-how-senate-can-vote-on-save-act-without-nuking-filibuster\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SAVE America Act<\/a> is not an option. <\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, the Department of Justice <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-ma\/pr\/legal-permanent-resident-arrested-voting-federal-elections-2008\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced<\/a> authorities had arrested Sunny Manhertz, 40, of Saugus, Massachusetts. The noncitizen has been charged with unlawful voting by an alien and one count of \u201cthe procurement, casting, or tabulation of ballots that are known to be materially false, fictitious, or fraudulent under state law,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-ma\/pr\/legal-permanent-resident-arrested-voting-federal-elections-2008\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to<\/a> the U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office for the District of Massachusetts.<\/p>\n<p>Manhertz, a Canadian citizen and legal permanent resident of the United States, is accused of voting in multiple federal elections, including the 2012, 2016, 2020, and 2024 general elections.\u00a0Federal authorities allege that Manhertz in 2016 lied on his Massachusetts voter registration form, checking \u201cYes\u201d to the form\u2019s question: \u201cAre you a Citizen of the United States of America?\u201d He did so, the complaint alleges, under penalty of perjury. <\/p>\n<figure>\n<p><span><\/p>\n<blockquote data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<div lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p>\ud83d\udea8 BREAKING: HSI ARRESTS CANADIAN MAN ON VOTER FRAUD CHARGES<\/p>\n<p>According to court documents, Manhertz, an alien from Canada, illegally registered to vote in Saugus, Mass. and allegedly voted in local, state, and federal elections since 2008.<\/p>\n<p>READ MORE \u2b07\ufe0f<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/zD8O3OSmRE\">https:\/\/t.co\/zD8O3OSmRE<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/fgiAy32pKY\">pic.twitter.com\/fgiAy32pKY<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u2014 HSI New England (@HSINewEngland) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HSINewEngland\/status\/2056816728626077870?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 19, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/span> <\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>If convicted on both charges, the noncitizen could face up to five years in prison, a maximum of four years supervised release and a combined fine up $350,000, the U.S. Attorney\u2019s office said.  <\/p>\n<h2>\u2018Why Citizenship Verification Matters\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-ma\/media\/1441321\/dl?inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">complaint<\/a> states that Manhertz has been a lawful permanent resident of the United States since 1987 but has never applied for U.S. citizenship. In June 2024, Manhertz filled out and returned a form for registered voters, according to the complaint. He checked the box that stated, \u201cI am still living in the Town of Saugus at the same address,\u201d the Department of Homeland Security Investigations alleges. <\/p>\n<p>Court <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-ma\/media\/1441321\/dl?inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">documents<\/a> show the foreign national also voted in the March 2024 presidential primary as well as several state elections. Manhertz has a history of voting for Democrats in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/soros-donates-1-million-to-stacey-abrams-campaign\/\" title=\"Soros Donates  Million to Stacey Abrams Campaign\">party primary elections<\/a>, according to the complaint. <\/p>\n<p>The complaint also asserts that \u201cManhertz knew he is not a United States citizen,\u201d noting that on Feb. 13, 2019, the noncitizen submitted to DHS application to replace a permanent resident card. On the form, Manhertz provided his Alien Registration Number and personal identifying information, according to the charging documents. He checked the box for Lawful Permanent Resident. He did so again in late June 2024, a little over four months before the presidential election, the complaint alleges.<\/p>\n<p>In March, Manhertz attended a political event, where he signed state primary nomination papers for two candidates, court documents state. He did so despite instructions on the nomination forms stating, \u201cWe are qualified voters of the commonwealth and of the district for which the nomination is made\u2026\u201d The primary is slated for Tuesday, Sept. 1.<\/p>\n<p>The affidavit alleges that Manhertz confirmed that he \u201chas been voting since 2008.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>In the document, the DHS special agent who investigated the election fraud allegations notes that he had previously served as a the election coordinator for Saugus. He\u2019s quite familiar with the elections process, particularly in the town where the violations allegedly occurred. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe commend the U.S. District Attorney in Massachusetts for taking action in this case. It shows that violations of election law will not be ignored,\u201d J. Christian Adams, president and general counsel of the Public Interest Legal Foundation said in a statement to The Federalist. \u201cCases like this show why citizenship verification matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So, once again, the thing that Democrats insist never happens has happened. It\u2019s funny how much election fraud you can find when you look for it. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs part of a continuing effort to investigate criminal violations of federal law, Homeland Security Investigations has examined voter rolls for certain Massachusetts communities to identify non-citizen registration to vote and non-citizen voting in federal elections. Among those communities is the Town of Saugus,\u201d the affidavit states. <\/p>\n<h2>\u2018Reserved for US Citizens\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>The Massachusetts case follows the indictments earlier this month of four noncitizens in New Jersey <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-nj\/pr\/multiple-aliens-charged-illegally-voting-federal-elections-and-making-false-statements\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">alleged<\/a> to have voted in federal elections. In January, two noncitizens in the Garden State were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-nj\/pr\/aliens-charged-illegally-voting-federal-election-and-making-false-statements-while\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">indicted<\/a> on charges of illegally voting and making false statements on their application for U.S. citizenship. Also in January, a federal grand jury in Birmingham, Ala., <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/compliance\/criminal-investigation\/non-citizen-charged-with-fraudulently-voting-in-numerous-elections\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">charged<\/a> a Canadian man on several counts of voting in state and federal elections as a noncitizen. The same man, Franc Neil Maloney, at the time was <a href=\"https:\/\/abc3340.com\/news\/local\/foreign-national-on-bond-for-child-pornography-charges-accused-of-voter-fraud\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reportedly<\/a> free on bond in a separate case in which he as charged with 187 counts of possessing child pornography and another four of disseminating it. <\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere in Massachusetts, Lina Maria Orovio-Hernandez, 59, a foreign national from Colombia, was convicted of multiple crimes, including one count of fraudulent voting and stealing north of $400,000 in federal benefits. <\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Boston city officials keep pushing measures that would allow noncitizens to vote in local elections. Boston City Councilor Julia Mejia introduced a home-rule petition in late March, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/local\/boston\/2026\/03\/24\/boston-non-citizen-voting-push-faces-beacon-hill-roadblock\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according<\/a> to Axios Boston. Massachusetts lawmakers rolled out dozens of voting bills this year, including a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billtrack50.com\/billdetail\/1602585\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">proposal<\/a> that would allow municipalities to extend voting to noncitizens without seeking approval from the legislature. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven if it gets Mayor Michelle Wu\u2019s signature, the proposal will likely flounder in the Legislature, just as it has for decades,\u201d the publication reported. Deep blue Massachusetts has long rejected proposals to expand voting in local and state elections to noncitizens. Even some Bay State liberals get that noncitizens shouldn\u2019t be voting in U.S. elections. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have a strong record in support of immigrants. But I believe the right to vote is reserved for US citizens &#038; those who have gone through the process,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boston.gov\/departments\/city-council\/edward-m-flynn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Boston City Councilor Ed Flynn,<\/a> who served in the U.S. Department of Labor during the Clinton administration, wrote in a post following the latest batch of noncitizen voting bills. \u201cAt this time, it\u2019s critical that we maintain faith in our <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >electoral system\/democracy &#038; avoid counterproductive<\/a> changes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If only the U.S. Senate would get that message. <\/p>\n<h2>\u2018Must Be Approved\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>President Donald Trump has upped the ante on his No. 1 election reform package, the SAVE America Act. The legislation would demand documentary proof of citizenship to register to vote, and photo ID to vote in U.S. elections. <\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, Trump gave his <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/05\/20\/john-cornyns-failure-to-fight-for-the-save-act-cost-him-trumps-endorsement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">endorsement<\/a> in Texas\u2019 Republican primary runoff election to challenger Ken Paxton, the Lone Star State\u2019s hard-driving attorney general. He passed over Sen. John Cornyn in no small part because of the four-term incumbent\u2019s milquetoast efforts to advance the SAVE America Act. Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D. seems to have <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/05\/13\/john-failure-is-not-an-option-thune-just-failed-election-integrity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">washed his hands<\/a> of the battle against intransigent Democrat senators who won\u2019t vote for cloture to end their filibuster. Election integrity costs Democrats elections. Thune and the leadership crew <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/05\/13\/thune-has-tried-nothing-to-pass-the-save-act-and-hes-all-out-of-ideas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">have done nothing<\/a> to challenge the filibuster, up to nuking it. <\/p>\n<p>Over the weekend, Trump urged Republicans to pass the bill via key spending packages, like reauthorization of FISA\u2019s Section 702 spying provision. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cVoter I.D., and Proof of Citizenship, must be approved, NOW. Crooked Mail-In Voting must be stopped!!! PUT IT ALL IN THE HOUSING AND FISA BILLS. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!\u201d the president <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/WhiteHouse\/status\/2055758144450498587\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a> on social media. <\/p>\n<figure>\n<p><span><\/p>\n<blockquote data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;THE SAVE AMERICA ACT MUST BE PASSED, NOW\u2026 We cannot, as a Country, put up with this any longer!!! Voter I.D., and Proof of Citizenship, must be approved, NOW.&#8221; \u2013 President\u00a0Donald J.
