Katie Britt (R-AL), plans to introduce legislation that would make the Mandatory E-Verify Act of 2026 permanent and require all U.S. employers-regardless of size-to use E-Verify when hiring. The goal is to prevent companies from employing people who are not authorized to live and work in the United States, framing the move as an additional step in the Trump management\u2019s immigration crackdown.<\/p>\n<p>E-Verify is a federal web system that <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >lets employers check job applicants\u2019 work authorization<\/a> against U.S. records. Britt\u2019s proposal would expand its nationwide requirement, strengthen civil and criminal penalties for hiring unauthorized workers, block states from restricting employer use of E-Verify, and improve fraud-prevention measures. It has been around for 30 years and was created by Congress in the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, despite pushes by lawmakers through the years, it has not been made a national requirement, the result of big business lobbyists\u2019 <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/business\/4539100\/immigration-groups-mass-deportations-blame-big-business\/\">ongoing efforts<\/a> to maintain a cheaper, illegal workforce.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Roughly 8.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/newt-gingrich-the-biden-opportunity-for-republicans\/\" title=\"Newt Gingrich: The Biden Opportunity For Republicans\">3 million illegal immigrants<\/a> were employed in the United States, as of 2022, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/business\/4539100\/immigration-groups-mass-deportations-blame-big-business\/\">according to<\/a> the Center for Migration Studies of New York. That number is believed to have grown to 10.8 million illegal immigrant workers as of last year, according to Britt\u2019s office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some states and federal agencies require employers to use E-Verify, but Britt\u2019s bill would require it nationwide for hiring. Her bill would also enhance civil and criminal penalties for employers who hire illegal immigrants, ensure states cannot prevent employers from using E-Verify, and improve fraud prevention measures within E-Verify.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a result, legitimate workers would see an increase in pay because businesses cannot undercut legal workers by hiring illegal laborers who are willing to work for less than minimum wage, according to Britt\u2019s office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe should enforce the law and ensure jobs go to Americans, not illegal aliens,\u201d Britt said. \u201cE-Verify works, evidenced by the more than 43 million times it was used in 2025 alone.
