They also discussed the details for a proposed Power of Siberia 2 natural gas pipeline, which has been in talks for years but has stalled due to financial disagreements over construction costs and other issues, according to <em>Reuters<\/em>. <\/p>\n<div class=\"article-paywall\">\n<p>The POS2 is a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/05\/20\/putin-xi-gas-pipeline-power-of-siberia-iran-war-.html\">proposed<\/a> 1,616-mile pipeline estimated to transport 50 billion cubic meters of natural gas from Russia\u2019s Arctic Yamal fields to China via Mongolia. An agreement was originally reached in September 2025, but the aforementioned delays have halted progress. Should it ever become a reality, the original agreement <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/09\/02\/power-of-siberia-2-russia-signs-new-gas-pipeline-deal-with-china.html\">stipulated<\/a> that the pipeline would run for 30 years.<\/p>\n<p>While details of the pipeline were an important part of the Xi-Putin meeting, Russian spokesman Dmitry Peskov <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/putin-china-live-russian-leader-meets-xi-beijing-days-after-trump-2026-05-20\/\">revealed<\/a> that the agreement\u2019s details are still not finalized. However, a \u201cgeneral understanding\u201d was supposedly reached. Despite the lack of progress on POS2, Putin <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/05\/20\/putin-xi-gas-pipeline-power-of-siberia-iran-war-.html\">expressed<\/a> enthusiasm over the \u201cbig potential in joint renewable energy projects.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRussian-Chinese energy cooperation is the driver of our economic interaction,\u201d Putin <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/en.kremlin.ru\/events\/president\/transcripts\/79783\">said<\/a>, according to a transcript provided by the Kremlin. \u201cRussia remains a reliable supplier of resources amid the Middle East crisis, while China acts as a responsible consumer of these resources.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >priorities include major joint projects<\/a> in industry, agriculture, transport and high technology, of course,\u201d Putin added.<\/p>\n<p>China is a substantial consumer of Russian energy, with the country recently <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/05\/20\/putin-xi-gas-pipeline-power-of-siberia-iran-war-.html\">increasing<\/a> its imports of Russian oil by \u201c35% year over year in the first quarter,\u201d according to CNBC.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would like to point out that Russia and China are actively cooperating in the energy sector. Our country is one of the largest exporters of oil, natural gas, including liquefied gas, and coal to China. We are, of course, ready to continue to reliably ensure uninterrupted supplies of all these fuels to the rapidly growing Chinese market,\u201d <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/tass.ru\/ekonomika\/27467851\">said<\/a> Putin, according to Russian state news agency TASS.<\/p>\n<p>The two leaders also discussed the importance of global geopolitics and the rising tensions worldwide. Unlike his meeting with President Trump, Xi released a joint statement with Putin, warning against a \u201creturn to the law of the jungle\u201d in foreign affairs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe global situation is becoming more complex,\u201d read Putin and Xi\u2019s joint <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/putin-china-live-russian-leader-meets-xi-beijing-days-after-trump-2026-05-20\/\">statement<\/a>. \u201cThe global peace and development agenda is facing new risks and challenges, and there is a danger of fragmentation of the international community and a return to the \u2018law of the jungle.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAttempts by a number of states to unilaterally manage global affairs, impose their interests on the entire world, and limit the sovereign development of other countries, in the spirit of the colonial era, have failed,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/foreign-policy\/4571695\/trump-russia-oil-sanctions-waiver-expire\/\">TRUMP ADMINISTRATION LETS RUSSIAN SEABORNE OIL SANCTIONS WAIVER EXPIRE<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And while the subject of the joint <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/live\/c86d7yqyyz6t\">statement<\/a> was \u201cdeepening relations of good neighborliness, friendship, and cooperation,\u201d both leaders condemned recent geopolitical events that could be interpreted as criticisms of the United States, even though neither Xi nor Putin referenced their intended target.<\/p>\n<p>Xi and Putin <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/live\/c86d7yqyyz6t\">blasted<\/a> \u201ctreacherous military strikes against other countries, the hypocritical use of negotiations as cover for preparing such strikes, the assassination of leaders of sovereign states, the destabilization of the domestic political situation in these states and the provocation of regime change, and the brazen kidnapping of national leaders for trial.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, in further comments criticizing such military operations, Xi and Putin\u2019s statement cited the United Nations Charter, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/live\/c86d7yqyyz6t\">claiming<\/a> the strikes \u201cgrossly violate the purposes and principles of the U.N.
