The article argues that Johnson was simply paraphrasing the Declaration\u2019s famous ideas about natural, God-given rights, and criticizes Tur and Atlantic writer McKay Coppins for failing to recognize this basic connection. It explains that the founders viewed rights as pre-political and \u201cunalienable,\u201d meaning legitimate government exists to protect them rather than create or revoke them. The piece also cites othre historical references to show that founders linked religion and duty to the Creator, and contrasts this wiht left-leaning views that treat rights as deriving from government-claims it says would allow government to redefine or remove rights.it further argues that this <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >foundational disagreement helps explain modern left initiatives restricting speech<\/a>, limiting religious liberty, and other efforts enabled by the belief that rights are not truly above government.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cWe hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.\u201d If you recognized that passage as perhaps the most famous line from the Declaration of Independence, congratulations: You are officially smarter than MS NOW\u2019s Katy Tur, who apparently has never bothered to read the Declaration of Independence.<\/p>\n<p>During a Monday panel segment, Tur questioned whether House Speaker Mike Johnson was \u201cputting God over the Declaration of Independence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about this passage from Mike Johnson declaring that \u2018Our rights do not derive from government. They come from you, our Creator and heavenly Father.\u2019 Is this him putting God over the Declaration of Independence?\u201d an incredulous Tur asked.<\/p>\n<figure>\n<p><span><\/p>\n<blockquote data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">God talk is SO foreign to MS NOW. Is this him putting God over the Declaration of Independence?<br \/>McKay Coppins: I\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/sfpykN5bYc\">pic.twitter.com\/sfpykN5bYc<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Tim Graham (@TimJGraham) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TimJGraham\/status\/2056471098057744725?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 18, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/span> <\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Nobody on the panel was apparently capable of pointing out that Johnson was merely paraphrasing one of the most famous passages of the Declaration. Instead, MS NOW contributor and Atlantic writer McKay Coppins (who also apparently has not read the Declaration) said he \u201cthink[s]\u201d the \u201cidea is not wholly uncommon\u201d and \u201cnot totally abnormal\u201d (as if it\u2019s <em>slightly<\/em> abnormal).<\/p>\n<p>But there is not much \u201cthinking\u201d that needs to be done in order to respond to Tur, as anyone with an elementary understanding of the Declaration could have simply pointed out that Johnson was loosely paraphrasing a key line from the document\u2019s second paragraph.<\/p>\n<p>Since Tur and Coppins seem confused about the concept of natural rights, here is a brief refresher: The founders believed that all men are created equal and born with certain natural rights that are pre-political and grounded in nature and reason. God does not make one man better than the other or with a right to rule another \u2014 as the British Crown believed and the colonists rejected. As Thomas Jefferson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/exhibits\/jefferson\/214.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">explained<\/a>: \u201cThe mass of mankind has not been born with saddles on their backs, nor a favored few booted and spurred, ready to ride them legitimately, by the grace of God.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, the founders were creating a form of government \u2014 the only form of government they believed to be legitimate \u2014 that was designed to <em>protect <\/em>those natural, \u201cunalienable\u201d rights that were endowed to us by our Creator. (A more detailed analysis of natural rights can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.claremont.org\/old\/js\/ckeditor\/ckfinder\/userfiles\/files\/The_Rise_and_Fall_of_Constitutional_Government.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>In fact, the founders acknowledged time and time again that rights come from God, going so far as to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archives.gov\/founding-docs\/virginia-declaration-of-rights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">say<\/a> in the Virginia Declaration of Rights of 1776 that \u201creligion\u201d is the \u201cduty which we owe to our Creator.\u201d In other words, the founders absolutely believed (to Tur\u2019s apparent surprise) that God is above any civil government or political document that civil government could produce because God <em>did<\/em> endow us with certain unalienable rights.<\/p>\n<p>Yet some of the biggest names on the left simply do not understand that. It isn\u2019t just Tur who is historically illiterate. Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/09\/04\/tim-kaine-thinks-youre-a-terrorist-if-you-believe-rights-come-from-god\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tim Kaine<\/a>, D-Va. \u2014 the same man who was nearly a heartbeat away from the presidency \u2014 said in September that if you believe rights come from God, you are a terrorist.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe notion that rights don\u2019t come from laws and don\u2019t come from the government, but come from the Creator \u2014 that\u2019s what the Iranian government believes. It\u2019s a theocratic regime that bases its rule on Sharia law and targets Sunnis, Bah\u00e1\u2019\u00eds, Jews, Christians and other religious minorities. And they do it because they believe that they understand what natural rights are from their Creator. So the statement that our rights do not come from our laws or our governments is extremely troubling,\u201d Kaine said.<\/p>\n<p>But the commentary from Kaine and Tur is proof of what happens when left-wing pundits and politicians lose touch with the foundation of America. They believe that rights come from government. If rights come from government, then government can redefine them and even revoke them. Freedom ceases to exist because the individual becomes subject to the whim of the passions of the government.<\/p>\n<p>The founders believed the exact opposite. They believed rights exist independently of government and therefore could not be taken away by government, which is why Tur\u2019s embarrassing question matters so much. Tur has just proven (<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/tag\/katy-tur\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">for the umpteenth time<\/a>) that she is not someone who can be trusted to comment on politics. Anyone who has never read the Declaration of Independence or who cannot grasp its most basic premise is not fit to lecture the public about American politics. Likewise, any politician who fails to understand that rights are God-given fundamentally misunderstands his role in office.<\/p>\n<p>But Tur and Kaine\u2019s commentary exposes a deeper problem, that is, many on the modern left are not merely ignorant or misguided in their knowledge of the Declaration \u2014 they simply do not care. And they do not care because they reject the Declaration\u2019s central premise all together. <\/p>\n<p>The left increasingly wants a government in which rights are derived from the government and where rights can similarly be revoked by the government. That worldview would make the left\u2019s crusade for laws censoring things like so<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-end-of-conservative-books-amazon-quietly-bans-books-they-deem-offensive-hate-speech\/\" title=\"\u2018The End Of Conservative Books\u2019: Amazon Quietly Bans Books They Deem Offensive, \u2018Hate Speech\u2019\">-called \u201chate speech<\/a>,\u201d undermining the Second Amendment, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/robert-pacienza-is-religious-liberty-hanging-by-a-thread\/\" title=\"Robert Pacienza: Is Religious ... \u201cHanging by a Thread...?\">restricting religious liberty<\/a>, and confiscating wealth to pay for their utopian fantasies much easier to accomplish if those pesky God-given rights aren\u2019t in the way.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>      Brianna Lyman is an elections correspondent at The Federalist.
