another has Massie with a slim advantage. <\/p>\n<div class=\"article-paywall\">\n<p>\u201cMassie continues to hold a durable base of support, especially among Republicans drawn to his independent brand and willingness to break with party leadership,\u201d a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/congressional\/4566906\/gallrein-lead-massie-latest-kentucky-primary-poll\/\">Quantus Insights poll<\/a> published this month reads. \u201cBut in a primary shaped heavily by [President Donald] Trump\u2019s endorsement, national attention, and outside spending, Gallrein\u2019s lead on both the initial ballot and leaner allocation shows the Trump-backed challenger in the stronger position entering the final stretch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Massie has warned that the race\u2019s outcome will boil down to voter turnout and has sparked <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AndrewSolender\/status\/2053870093604368643\">controversy<\/a> for blaming donor funding from <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/congressional\/4571959\/massie-panicked-trump-aipac-kentucky-primary\/\">Israel supporters and lobbyists<\/a> for fueling Gallrein\u2019s campaign. He told the <em>Washington Examiner <\/em>over the weekend that he <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/congressional\/4571017\/massie-anti-establishment-brand-trump-backlash\/\">believes the race<\/a> is \u201cthe most expensive in history, like anywhere.\u201d According to AdImpact, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AdImpact_Pol\/status\/2056399251890926063\">$32.6 million<\/a> has been poured into the race, the most expensive House primary on record.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe real reason that this race is a serious race, and I may lose, is because a foreign lobby has fully funded, to the extent that they\u2019ve never done in any Republican race ever before, my opponent,\u201d Massie said during <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/congressional\/4558355\/massie-kentucky-house-primary-israel-spending\/\">a recent appearance<\/a> on <em>The Tucker Carlson Show<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p> \u201cIt\u2019s going to be close,\u201d he added. \u201cThe result is going to be based on who turns out.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-is-gallrein-challenging-massie\">Why is Gallrein challenging Massie?<\/h2>\n<p>Gallrein <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/congressional\/3858139\/ed-gallrein-campaign-challenging-thomas-massie\/\">entered the race<\/a> in October, after Trump personally pushed him to launch a campaign <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/congressional\/3855748\/trump-ed-gallrein-primary-thomas-massie\/\">to oust<\/a> Massie. The incumbent lawmaker, known as a maverick and more libertarian member of the GOP who is frequently isolationist and fiscally conservative, has opposed Trump\u2019s agenda on several fronts, coming out against military action in Iran, denouncing the United States\u2019s long-standing support for Israel, and bucking the president\u2019s signature \u201cbig, beautiful bill,\u201d due partly to concerns it would raise the national debt and fail to prioritize domestic issues. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThirty minutes into that conversation on Oct. 17, President Trump said, \u2018Ed, I don\u2019t have two consecutive terms like President Reagan to enact the agenda that I was overwhelmingly elected to deliver,\u201d Gallrein <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/opinion\/columnists\/4551998\/ed-gallrein-shows-northern-kentucky-what-he-is-made-of\/\">previously told<\/a> the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cEvery year matters, every month matters, every week matters, every day matters. And every vote in the Congress and Senate matters.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen it hit me hard,\u201d Gallrein continued. \u201cBecause I\u2019d already lived a life of sacred obligation as a career SEAL officer, leading troops all around the world. Some who didn\u2019t come home. (AP Photo\/Julia Demaree Nikhinson)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As Trump has <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/congressional\/4571847\/trump-revenge-tour-massie-kentucky-primary\/\">flexed his endorsement power<\/a> in the state he won by over 30 points in 2024, Massie has sought to walk a line between assuring voters he backs the majority of the president\u2019s agenda and touting his independent stance. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cLook \u2026 I agree with President Trump nearly all of the time. It\u2019s why in the past, I\u2019ve endorsed him, and he\u2019s endorsed me,\u201d Massie said in one <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/congressional\/4493134\/massie-touts-previous-trump-endorsement-ad\/\">campaign ad<\/a> aired across his district. \u201cBut the other truth is, I\u2019m one of the few Republicans in Washington who stands up to every president, including President Trump, when it comes to these <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/massie-touts-previous-trump-endorsement-in-latest-campaign-ad\/\" title=\"... touts previous Trump ... in latest ... ad\">big government spending bills<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But he could face a tough night on Tuesday. Sen. <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/bill-cassidy\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"2103\">Bill Cassidy\u2019s<\/a> (R-LA) Saturday primary loss to a Trump-backed challenger underscored the extent to which the president dominates the party, signaling to other lawmakers critical of the White House that they may face steep odds. (AP Photo\/Jon Cherry)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Aside from his military service, Gallrein has touted his farming roots. <\/p>\n<p>His family runs a destination farm in Shelby County, in the western stretch of the 4th District, and the candidate grew up on the family dairy farm, saying previously to the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em> that it\u2019s \u201ca contact sport, and for five generations we\u2019ve been farming in Kentucky for over a hundred years down on the river bottoms.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Since Trump recruited Gallrein to run against Massie, the Republican camp has become divided as to whom to support. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is set to appear at one of Gallreign\u2019s campaign events in Kentucky on Monday afternoon. Meanwhile, lawmakers such as Reps. Lauren Boebert (CO) and Warren Davidson (OH) have continued to stand by Massie, including during <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MassieforKY\/status\/2056189934201872673?s=20\">a campaign event<\/a> on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Accusations have been hurled on both sides of the race, throwing the primary into the limelight. <\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/congressional\/4571847\/trump-revenge-tour-massie-kentucky-primary\/\"><strong>TRUMP REVENGE TOUR BARRELS TOWARD MASSIE WITH CASSIDY AND INDIANA IN ITS WAKE<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Massie\u2019s campaign has been hit by allegations from his ex-girlfriend that the incumbent congressman offered her thousands of dollars <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/4565984\/ex-girlfriend-cynthia-west-thomas-massie-offering-cash-drop-complaint-against-ally\/\">to drop a workplace wrongful termination<\/a> complaint against his political ally, Rep. Victoria Spartz (R-IN). <\/p>\n<p>Gallrein has <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/congressional\/4488353\/massie-feud-trump-endorsed-opponent-gallrein-ditch-party-label\/\">faced scrutiny<\/a> for changing his registration from Republican to independent in 2016, just weeks after Trump was announced as the GOP\u2019s presumptive nominee for president.
