A New York Times-Siena College poll finds that more than 60% of respondents say Trump\u2019s decision to go to war with Iran was the wrong choice, though only just over 20% of Republicans share that view.  <\/p>\n<p>The polling also shows Trump\u2019s overall approval at just 37%, its lowest level in his second term, <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >alongside worsening economic sentiment<\/a>: inflation rose to 3.8% in April and gas prices have climbed, with the share rating the economy \u201cpoor\u201d up about 11 points as January and right-track views down to 32%. Trump\u2019s leadership is being tested as he attempts to oust lawmakers whom he believes have betrayed him. The president <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/congressional\/4554655\/trump-primary-revenge-tour-gerrymandering-indiana\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/congressional\/4554655\/trump-primary-revenge-tour-gerrymandering-indiana\/\">ran a successful campaign in Indiana<\/a>, ousting several longtime state senators who voted against a Trump-backed redistricting effort last year, and on Saturday, Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA), who voted to convict Trump in his second impeachment trial, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/congressional\/4571020\/cassidy-loses-reelection-campaign\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/congressional\/4571020\/cassidy-loses-reelection-campaign\/\">lost his primary<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-paywall\">\n<p>Trump\u2019s overall approval rating has sunk to its lowest point in his second term, with just 37% of respondents saying they approve of his job performance.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/congressional\/4572206\/trump-economic-approval-poor-democrats-score-similar\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/congressional\/4572206\/trump-economic-approval-poor-democrats-score-similar\/\"><strong>TRUMP\u2019S ECONOMIC APPROVAL RATING STILL POOR, THOUGH DEMOCRATS SCORE SIMILARLY: POLL<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At the same time, most respondents indicated anxieties about the economy as <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/4563753\/inflation-april-iran-energy-prices\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/4563753\/inflation-april-iran-energy-prices\/\">inflation rose to 3.8%<\/a> in April, the highest level since May 2023, while gas prices have also surged in recent weeks.<\/p>\n<p>The share of voters who rate the economy as \u201cpoor\u201d has risen by 11 percentage points since January, up to nearly half of all voters giving the worst rating for the economy. Only roughly half of Republicans said the economy was only fair or poor.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, the share of voters saying the country was on the right track fell from 37% in January to 32% in the latest poll, likely due to a 12-point drop among Republicans.<\/p>\n<p>While the numbers are looking dismal for Republicans overall, many within the party still appear satisfied with the state of their affiliation. Only 26% of Democrats said they were satisfied with their party, indicating Democrats have struggled to improve their political brand as they look ahead to competitive battles in the 2026 midterm elections and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, just 23% of Republicans said they were unsatisfied with their party.<\/p>\n<p>The president\u2019s most favorable issue remains immigration, with an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trump-economy-raises-optimism-to-four-year-high\/\" title=\"Trump economy raises optimism to four-year high\">approval rating holding steady<\/a> at 41%.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has brushed off economic concerns raised by the war in recent weeks.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/world\/4571783\/drone-strike-uae-nuclear-plant-iran-war\/\"><strong>DRONE STRIKE STARTS FIRE OUTSIDE UAE NUCLEAR PLANT AS IRAN WAR CEASEFIRE TESTED<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think about Americans\u2019 financial situation,\u201d <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/4565100\/trump-financial-situation-not-motivating-talks-end-iran-war\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/4565100\/trump-financial-situation-not-motivating-talks-end-iran-war\/\">he said<\/a>. \u201cI don\u2019t think about anybody. I think about one thing: We cannot let Iran have a nuclear weapon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The poll was conducted among 1,507 registered voters nationwide from May 11 to May 15.
