LePage is the Republican nominee to contest Maine\u2019s 2nd Congressional District this November.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-paywall\">\n<p>Maine\u2019s 2nd Congressional District is seen as a prime pick-up opportunity for Republicans this fall. President <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/donald-trump\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"4\">Donald Trump<\/a> won the district by 10 percentage points over former Vice President <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/kamala-harris\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"748\">Kamala Harris<\/a> in 2024. The race is open after four-term Rep. <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/jared-golden\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"7050\">Jared Golden<\/a> (D-ME) announced his retirement from politics last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was the biggest advocate for your tax dollars and the biggest threat to fraudsters that ever existed in the state of Maine,\u201d Vance said. \u201cLet\u2019s send Paul LePage to the U.S. House.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The swing through Maine is the latest in a string of campaign appearances Vance has made for House Republicans in recent weeks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWinning in the midterms really comes down to one thing \u2014 turning out your base,\u201d Republican strategist Cesar Conda told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cAside from Trump himself, I\u2019m not sure there\u2019s anyone better positioned to energize the MAGA base than JD Vance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last week, Vance was in <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/iowa\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"468\">Iowa<\/a> for Rep. Zach Nunn (R-IA). Nunn is facing a tough reelection challenge in a district Trump won by 4 percentage points in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>The month before, Vance traveled to <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/arizona\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"327\">Arizona<\/a> to address a Turning Point USA event with Rep. Juan Ciscomani (R-AZ), who is seeking reelection in a district Trump won by 1 percentage point.<\/p>\n<p>In March, Vance was in <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/north-carolina\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"552\">North Carolina<\/a>\u2018s 1st Congressional District for Laurie Buckhout, who is running against Rep. Don Davis (D-NC). Under a <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >newly drawn congressional map<\/a>, which goes into effect this cycle, Trump won the district by 11 percentage points.<\/p>\n<p>And in February, Vance was at a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/wisconsin\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"239\">Wisconsin<\/a> manufacturing facility with Rep. Derrick Van Orden (R-WI). Trump won Van Orden\u2019s district by 8 percentage points in 2024, but the Republican\u2019s race is considered a toss-up by the Cook Political Report.<\/p>\n<p>Six months before the midterm elections, Democrats have an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trump-pivots-to-midterms-with-trump-accounts-push\/\" title=\"... pivots to midterms with ... accounts push\">average 6 percentage point advantage<\/a> over Republicans in generic congressional ballot polls, according to <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolling.com\/polls\/state-of-the-union\/generic-congressional-vote\"><em>RealClearPolitics<\/em><\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome will say he\u2019s not the right fit for swing districts or more moderate areas,\u201d Conda said. \u201cBut I\u2019d push back a little on that. I think JD actually has a real ability to connect with working class voters, people who might otherwise just stay home on Election Day. That could matter a lot come November.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sources close to the White House pushed back on the idea that Vance is becoming increasingly responsible for campaigning before this November\u2019s midterm elections, particularly considering Trump was in <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/china\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"232\">China<\/a> this week and has been contending with the war with <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/iran\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"100\">Iran<\/a> since February.<\/p>\n<p>A second GOP source, who praised Vance\u2019s communication skills, suggested the first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/jd-vance-oren-cass-and-more-the-key-players-in-the-new-right\/\" title=\"..., Oren Cass and more: The key players in the New Right\">millennial vice president<\/a> was being deployed to help the party shore up its appeal to younger men and independents. Those demographics have been especially skeptical of the Iran conflict.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a tag team effort,\u201d the source told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cThe president and the vice president do balance each other out quite perfectly, where the president is very good at turning out the base, but I do see Vance as a way of appealing to independents a little bit more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vance is also responsible for GOP fundraising as the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/republican-national-committee\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"2059\">Republican National Committee<\/a>\u2019s finance chairman, raising $60 million during the past 12 months.<\/p>\n<p>Campaigning also gives Vance an opportunity to introduce himself more to the public, especially when Trump is otherwise occupied, according to George Mason University political science professor Jeremy Mayer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Vance] has a lot of room to define himself,\u201d Mayer told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cThere\u2019s a special problem with being Donald Trump\u2019s vice president, and that is that Trump just sucks the air, the attention out of anyone else who tries to rise up in the Republican Party.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/4564754\/trump-cutting-costs-iran-price-hikes\/\"><strong>WHAT TRUMP IS DOING TO CUT COSTS FOR AMERICANS AMID IRAN WAR PRICE HIKES<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>During his rally on Thursday in Maine, Vance sought to portray his efforts to root out fraud in broad terms that could appeal to even the most \u201cgenerous people.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t want American citizens to go hungry,\u201d he said. \u201cBut you know what destroys those programs? And not just destroys those programs, but destroys the spirit of generosity that makes those programs possible?
