A CBS News poll found 35% of respondents said Democrats have the better economic approach versus 31% for \u201cTrump and Republicans,\u201d and respondents were more likely to blame Republican policies for hurting their cost of living.<\/p>\n<p>The survey comes as consumer costs are being affected by disruptions tied to the war in Iran-notably impacts on gas prices through the Strait of Hormuz-and with midterm elections less than six months away. Concerns among right-leaning voters that negative perceptions of GOP economic performance coudl hurt politically in November are highlighted.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s 2024 win was partly driven by voters seeing Republicans as stronger on the economy after record inflation under the Biden governance, but approval for Trump on inflation has dropped sharply since March 2025. Nearly seven in ten respondents also say they do not feel they have a clear understanding of what is happening in the Strait of Hormuz. The results reflect concerns on the Right that negative perceptions of the GOP\u2019s handling of the economy since Trump came into office may be a political liability in November.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-paywall\">\n<p>Trump\u2019s victory in the 2024 presidential election was driven in part by an electorate that viewed Republicans as being stronger on economic issues following <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/3005344\/white-house-responds-biden-debunked-9-percent-inflation-claim\/\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/joe-biden-americans-should-have-peace-of-mind-amidst-record-setting-inflation\/\" title=\"Joe Biden: Americans Should Have \u2018Peace Of Mind\u2019 Amidst Record-Setting Inflation\">record-setting inflation<\/a> <\/a>under the Biden administration.<\/p>\n<p>But just over a quarter of respondents in the poll approve of Trump\u2019s handling of inflation, down 19 percentage points from March 2025. Rising prices have also been linked to <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/op-eds\/4553782\/trump-causing-real-inflation-why-so-insidious\/\">Trump\u2019s tariff agenda<\/a>, though the war in Iran has become the larger focus of economic concerns since it started on Feb. 28. <\/p>\n<p>Almost seven in ten respondents say they are not getting a clear understanding of the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, reflecting the administration\u2019s struggle to explain the war to the public.<\/p>\n<p>The poll was conducted with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/exclusive-daily-wire-poll-most-americans-oppose-oscars-diversity-requirements\/\" title=\"EXCLUSIVE: Daily Wire Poll: Most Americans Oppose Oscars\u2019 Diversity Requirements\">nationally representative sample<\/a> of 2,064 U.S. adults between May 13 and 15, and the sample was weighted to be representative of adults nationwide based on the 2024 presidential vote and demographic data from the U.S. Census American Community Survey and Current Population Survey.<\/p>\n<p>Declines in approval for the president were most notable among White Americans, with only 43% approving of the way Trump is handling his job.
