Abigail Spanberger. One suit is in state court and the other in federal court, challenging bans on \u201cassault weapons\u201d and on magazines that hold more than 15 rounds as violations of the Second Amendment.<\/p>\n<p>The NRA argues the \u201cassault weapons\u201d ban is unconstitutional because it targets firearms and magazines commonly used by law-abiding peopel, which are not \u201cdangerous and unusual\u201d under Supreme Court precedent.Spanberger said the laws are intended too keep firearms designed to cause maximum casualties off the streets and said she would work to clarify the language despite not securing an amendment for certain hunting-related firearms.<\/p>\n<p>The legal fight in Virginia comes as the U.S.Supreme Court considers whether to take up multiple Second Amendment cases addressing both \u201cassault weapons\u201d bans and high-capacity magazine restrictions, with potential decisions expected soon.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<article class=\"fn-body\">\n<p>The <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/national-rifle-association\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"1777\">National Rifle Association<\/a> announced a pair of lawsuits on Friday against <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/virginia\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"96\">Virginia\u2019s<\/a> ban on so-called \u201cassault weapons\u201d immediately after Gov. <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/abigail-spanberger\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"11780\">Abigail Spanberger<\/a> (D-VA) signed it into law, as the Supreme Court <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/supreme-court\/4540303\/supreme-court-sitting-key-second-amendment-cases\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/supreme-court\/4540303\/supreme-court-sitting-key-second-amendment-cases\/\">could weigh in<\/a> on the legality of similar laws in other states in the near future.<\/p>\n<p>The NRA announced two lawsuits, one in a state court and another in a federal court, to take aim at a pair of <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/guns-and-firearms\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"780\">gun<\/a> laws signed by Spanberger. The laws ban the sale and manufacturing of \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/assault-weapons\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"2501\">assault weapons<\/a>\u201d and the sale of magazines with more than 15 rounds, respectively. Therefore, they cannot be banned, and the Virginia laws challenged herein must be declared unconstitutional by a court competent to do so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Spanberger praised the pair of identical bills, which install the \u201cassault weapons\u201d ban effective July 1, in a statement released when she signed them into law.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am signing this bill into law because firearms designed to inflict maximum casualties do not belong on our streets. We are taking this step to protect families and support the law enforcement officers who work every day to keep our communities safe,\u201d Spanberger said.\u00a0\u201cWhile the General Assembly chose not to adopt my amendment that specifically carves out certain firearms frequently used for hunting, I will work with the patrons to clarify this language.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new legal battle in the Old Dominion over its \u201cassault weapons\u201d and high-capacity magazine bans comes as the Supreme Court considers taking up the two issues in its upcoming term. The court is sitting on three petitions to hear cases challenging \u201cassault weapons\u201d bans and two <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >cases challenging high-capacity magazine bans<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/supreme-court\/4540303\/supreme-court-sitting-key-second-amendment-cases\/\" type=\"post\" id=\"4540303\">SUPREME COURT SITTING ON SEVERAL KEY SECOND AMENDMENT CASES<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The three pending \u201cassault weapons\u201d ban petitions include <em>National Association for Gun Rights v. Lamont<\/em> and <em>Grant v. Higgins<\/em>, which both deal with a Connecticut law, and <em>Viramontes v. Cook County<\/em>, which deals with an Illinois law. The two challenges to high-capacity magazine bans include <em>Duncan v. Bonta<\/em>, which deals with a California law, and <em>Gator\u2019s Custom Guns v.
