Gavin Newsom said redistricting changes being pursued by Republican-led states-especially actions that reduce black-majority districts-amount to \u201cJim Crow 2.0\u201d and represents \u201cstone cold racism.\u201d His remarks come after the Supreme Court\u2019s *Louisiana v. Reform Recommendations\">redraw districts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Newsom criticized Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry for suspending the state\u2019s House primary shortly before Election Day, a move that left many ballots invalid, and accused him of trying to eliminate black depiction. Similar concerns have been echoed by other Democrats, including rep. Callais<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-paywall\">\n<p>The decision moved the redistricting battle into a new phase, as the ruling found that a Louisiana congressional map was unconstitutional for creating race-based districts, weakening the Voting Rights Act and reinvigorating other red states to redistrict. <\/p>\n<p>Gov. Jeff Landry (R-LA) <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/congressional\/4559601\/where-things-stand-louisiana-primaries\/\">moved to suspend<\/a> the state\u2019s House primary elections following the decision, days before voters were set to go to the polls. <\/p>\n<p>But the suspension confirmed so close to the primary election rendered 45,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/jeff-landry-brushes-off-concerns-over-45000-discarded-ballots\/\" title=\"... brushes off concerns over 45,000 discarded ballots\">000 early voting ballots<\/a> in the state null. When pressed on this in a <em>60 Minutes<\/em> interview, Landry said, \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/4562596\/jeff-landry-45000-discarded-ballots-suspended-louisiana-primaries\/\">It\u2019s not my fault<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Newsom slammed Landry for the decision, accusing the Louisiana governor of canceling the election to \u201celiminate black representation.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t believe this is happening,\u201d Newsom said. \u201cMy parents talked to me about this and I said, \u2018Well, thank God this is not going to happen in my lifetime,\u2019 and it\u2019s happening in real time.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/california\/\">California<\/a> governor continued to push back on the efforts, categorizing moves to eliminate black majority districts as \u201canti-black.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnti-woke is anti-black. All these attacks on DEI is anti-black,\u201d he said. \u201c[The] level of racism is sick. Rewriting history is censoring a historical fact. [The] number of African Americans being eliminated from key positions and posts, the Pentagon and elsewhere is sick.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s happening in the United States of America in the open and it needs to be called out.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Newsom\u2019s comments echoed those of other Democrats who continue to push back on Republicans\u2019 redistricting efforts, including Rep. <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/Jim-Clyburn\/\">Jim Clyburn<\/a> (D-SC), whose seat is 1 of 3 in which black Democrats might be eliminated. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve got a president that\u2019s taken black folks out of everything,\u201d Clyburn told <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/congress\/congressional-black-caucus-supreme-court-redistricting-decision-rcna344565\">NBC News<\/a>. \u201cSo I don\u2019t want us to just look at this voting case in isolation. No, this is a comprehensive attempt on the part of this administration to redeem Jim Crow. \u2026 He\u2019s trying to turn the clock back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Newsom, who has expressed interest in running for president in 2028, said he feels a \u201cdeep responsibility\u201d to respond to the situation not as a governor, but as a \u201chuman being.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not why our founding fathers lived and died,\u201d Newsom said. \u201cIt was about the expansion of liberty, the expansion of freedom, including more and more people, and we\u2019re seeing exactly the opposite of that take shape under this administration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Newsom\u2019s comments come months after he successfully passed a new congressional map in California that could help <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/democrats\/\">Democrats<\/a> win more seats in the midterm elections. <\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/finance-and-economy\/4567677\/newsom-legacy-revised-budget-proposal\/\"><strong>NEWSOM\u2019S LEGACY ON THE LINE WHEN HE UNVEILS REVISED BUDGET PROPOSAL<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In November, Californians overwhelmingly voted in favor of Proposition 50, a referendum temporarily creating a new congressional map in the Golden State that could favor Democrats. <\/p>\n<p>California\u2019s new congressional map, which a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/state\/4419383\/california-democrat-congressional-map-midterm-elections\/\">federal court ruled<\/a> could proceed in a 2-1 decision, was created to possibly neutralize the anticipated seats Republicans would gain in <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/texas\/\">Texas<\/a> after the Lone Star State redrew its map to help the GOP in the midterm elections. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gov.
