Vance used the stop to push the Trump governance\u2019s broader effort to crack down on Medicaid fraud nationwide, arguing that maine has been too tolerant of fraud and mismanagement.<\/p>\n<p>He said fraud against taxpayers is harming legitimate beneficiaries and criticized Gov. Janet Mills for refusing to cooperate with federal authorities. But let me be honest, maybe Maine is the bronze medalist.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-paywall\">\n<p>Vance said the reason for this was that Gov. Janet Mills (D-ME) was refusing to cooperate with the federal government on the crackdown.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you look at the fraud that has happened in this state, if you look at the illegal immigrant communities who have taken benefits that ought to, by right, go to the people in this room,\u201d he said. \u201cWhat you have in Maine is a festering problem where people have been taken advantage of, and they\u2019ve been stolen from, and your government hasn\u2019t done anything about it.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Vance accused Mills and former President Joe Biden of taking Maine \u201cfrom a state that did not have a serious fraud problem to one where I can honestly say it\u2019s one of the worst states in the union.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, Vance and the members of President Donald Trump\u2019s anti-fraud <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/4411680\/vance-announces-new-assistant-attorney-general-position-fraud\/\">task force<\/a> announced new steps to pressure states to cooperate with the federal government to root out fraud.<\/p>\n<p>The task force sent letters to each state Medicaid program, pressing them to cooperate with the Trump administration or lose federal funding for \u201cMedicaid Fraud Control units.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur goal here is not to do that. We don\u2019t want to turn off any money. What we want to do is ensure that people are taking fraud seriously. We want to protect Medicaid. We want to protect Medicare, but we can\u2019t do that if the states that are administering those programs are allowing those programs to be fleeced by fraudsters,\u201d he said at the time. \u201cSo we encourage \u2014 whether it\u2019s California in New York or Maryland or Ohio \u2014 we encourage people to work with us.
