interview with WTOP News come just days after state Attorney General <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/jay-jones\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"19766\">Jay Jones<\/a> filed an emergency petition to the U.S. <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/supreme-court\/\">Supreme Court<\/a>, requesting the justices reinstate the Democratic map approved by voters in April and <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/4551658\/virginia-supreme-court-blocks-redistricting-referendum\/\">struck down<\/a> by the Virginia Supreme Court\u00a0last week.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-paywall\">\n<p>Spanberger <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/wtop.com\/virginia\/2026\/05\/va-governor-concerned-redistricting-battle-could-make-voters-reluctant-to-cast-ballot-this-fall\/\">told the outlet<\/a> that the petition to the Supreme Court is \u201cimportant, but when it comes to the execution of elections, no matter the outcome in that case, we will be running our elections beginning next month with early voting on the current maps that we have.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>She also pointed to the state\u2019s lapsed <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Jaaavis\/status\/2053621909628080224?s=20\">Tuesday deadline<\/a> for changes to the congressional map. Virginia\u2019s 2026 primaries are set for Aug. 4, with early voting beginning on June 19. All of the state\u2019s U.S. representatives are up for reelection for the midterm elections.<\/p>\n<p>The redistricting debacle was bound to cause a bit of confusion either way, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/congressional\/4487786\/dorothy-mcauliffe-launches-run-congress-redrawn-district-virginia\/\">as some candidates<\/a> had already planned on running in new districts created by the map approved by voters. That map, crafted by the Democratic state legislature, would likely have given Democrats a 10-1 advantage in the commonwealth\u2019s congressional delegation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat needs to happen is we need to focus on the task at hand, which is winning races in November,\u201d Spanberger said.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/supreme-court\/4563668\/virginia-democrats-ask-supreme-court-to-reinstate-nullified-redistricting-amendment\/\" type=\"post\" id=\"4563668\">VIRGINIA DEMOCRATS ASK SUPREME COURT TO REINSTATE NULLIFIED REDISTRICTING AMENDMENT<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>She told the outlet that she \u201csomewhat doggedly\u201d believes Democrats can flip two to four GOP-held seats in Virginia\u2019s House delegation this year.<\/p>\n<p>She did not specify which seats she is eyeing, but Democrats have been vocal about targeting Reps. Rob Wittman (R-VA) and Jen Kiggans (R-VA).
