Democrat politicians and pundits have long claimed that any proposed shift away from race-based gerrymandering is racist, repeatedly weaponizing the issue to smear Republicans.<\/p>\n<p>The Politico <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/05\/14\/poll-democrats-redistricting-black-voters-00919972\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">poll<\/a>, conducted in the wake of the Supreme Court\u2019s recent <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/04\/29\/supreme-court-smacks-down-rampant-race-based-gerrymandering\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">decision<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/05\/01\/scotus-decision-striking-down-racial-gerrymandering-shows-alito-plays-the-long-game\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">on the <\/a>Voting Rights Act, shows \u201ca lot of Democrats are willing to sacrifice Black voting power to beat the GOP.\u201d At face value, respondents \u2014 who were Kamala Harris voters \u2014 said discriminatory gerrymandering to carve out special districts for black voters and other minorities is more important \u201ceven if it means Democrats draw fewer seats.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-4250605934\" class=\"d-flex justify-content-center fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2 fdrlst__b89e9-entity-placement\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1463670073398-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cBut that number changes significantly when the question is asked in the context of the Supreme Court ruling and Republican gerrymandering \u2014 and a 45 percent plurality instead say that Democrats must <em>counter<\/em> GOP efforts, \u2018even if it means reducing the number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/report-some-democrats-concerned-their-voting-rights-bill-might-be-racist\/\" title=\"Report: Some ... Concerned Their \u2018Voting Rights\u2019 Bill Might Be Racist\">majority-minority districts<\/a>,\u2019\u201d Politico\u2019s Erin Doherty, Andrew Howard, and Riley Rogerson wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The Supreme Court\u2019s decision on the Voting Rights Act clarified that Section 2  is meant to enforce the Constitution\u2019s prohibition on intentional racial discrimination, not force \u201cStates to engage in the very race-based discrimination that the Constitution forbids.\u201d In the wake of the decision, several states have hinted they may redistrict, while Louisiana (the state at the center of the case) is set to redraw its maps, and Tennessee and Florida have also redistricted.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, Democrats suffered a setback when the <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/05\/08\/with-gerrymandering-backfire-va-dems-have-done-more-for-gop-than-indiana-republicans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Virginia Supreme Court<\/a> struck down a proposal that would have shifted the state from a six Democrat seats and five Republican seats to 10 Democrat seats and one Republican seat. Virginia violated its own constitution in trying to ram through the new map, the court ruled.<\/p>\n<p>Now Democrats say they are willing to do the thing they claim is racist if Republicans do it: eliminate districts specifically created based on skin color to be \u201cmajority-minority\u201d districts. As Politico noted, this could look like redrawing maps in the already heavily gerrymandered blue states of New York and Illinois by drawing district lines to pack \u201clarge numbers of Black voters into red-leaning areas in order to make them bluer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This stands in stark contrast to what Democrat politicians have been publicly saying about black voters\u2019 representation. <\/p>\n<p>Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/live\/2026\/apr\/29\/king-charles-new-york-donald-trump-zohran-mamdani-iran-us-politics-live\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">criticized<\/a> the Supreme Court\u2019s ruling, alleging it \u201copens the floodgates for states across the south to redraw their Congressional districts and make voters of color essentially invisible in our democracy.\u201d Schumer added that the decision is \u201canother step towards resurrecting the Jim Crow south.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Louisiana Rep. Troy Carter said, \u201cWithout the protections of the Voting Rights Act, there is no evidence to suggest that Black voters in our state will be able to elect candidates of their choice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Former Vice President Kamala Harris <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/KamalaHarris\/status\/2049582135103680940?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> the decision \u201cstripped away\u201d protection for \u201cBlack and brown voters against maps deliberately drawn to dilute their political power.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Just as the Democrat poll respondents made clear their concern is not really the elimination of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/alabama-redistricting-fight-state-appeals-to-supreme-court-to-avoid-special-master\/\" title=\"Alabama appeals to Supreme Court to avoid special master in redistricting dispute.\">race-based districts<\/a> but whether that change helps or hurts Democrats politically, Democrat leaders are motivated by the same goal \u2014 preserving their party\u2019s power. The difference is that rather than openly admit the fight is about partisan advantage, Democrat leaders are framing Republican redistricting efforts as racist in hopes of guilt-tripping squishy Republicans into backing down.<\/p>\n<p>Either way, the goal of Democrat voters and politicians is the same: retain power for the party. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">\n<div class=\"article-author-description fst-italic\">      Brianna Lyman is an elections correspondent at The Federalist.
