But my family has been painfully aware of the drug\u2019s dangers ever since it almost killed someone I love. She didn\u2019t even take it for an abortion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLynn,\u201d a close family member, discovered in January 2025 that she and her husband were expecting a baby. Their joy was soon dashed when Lynn realized she was having a miscarriage. She went to the emergency room, where medical staff told her she had not passed the baby, and suggested she take <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/drugs-supplements\/mifepristone-oral-route\/description\/drg-20067123\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mifepristone<\/a> instead of a\u00a0dilation and curettage (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/tests-procedures\/dilation-and-curettage\/about\/pac-20384910\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">D&#038;C<\/a>)\u00a0to \u201ccomplete\u201d the miscarriage. That advice almost took her life.<\/p>\n<p>After taking mifepristone, she hemorrhaged so severely her family called 911 for an ambulance. She was bleeding through her clothes, unable to stand, and in an altered mental state. Emergency room staff told her that \u201cit\u2019s just a miscarriage\u201d and sent her home. Back in the ER six hours later with continued hemorrhaging and altered status, she was given two units of blood and released, again.<\/p>\n<p>On her third hospital trip \u2014 12 hours <em>after<\/em> the transfusion and four days after taking the pill \u2014 she was still bleeding profusely and critically ill. Her mom asked a nurse, \u201cHow many cases do you get like Lynn\u2019s?\u201d The nurse replied she didn\u2019t know because these events were coded as miscarriage, but it happened \u201ca lot.\u201d When pressed that it was the mifepristone causing Lynn\u2019s hemorrhage, the nurse shrugged and said this incident would also be charted as a miscarriage.<\/p>\n<p>Why? Obama- and Biden-era regulations hide adverse effects of the mifepristone from the public. In other words, abortion politics. Not including \u201cself-managed\u201d chemical abortions, roughly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/2024\/03\/medication-abortion-accounted-63-all-us-abortions-2023-increase-53-2020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">65 percent<\/a> of abortions are now from the pill rather than a medical procedure. Some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2026\/03\/24\/nx-s1-5757550\/abortion-telemedicine-travel-mifepristone-misoprostol\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">women claim it is an \u201ceasier\u201d option<\/a> after the Supreme Court <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/06\/24\/1102305878\/supreme-court-abortion-roe-v-wade-decision-overturn#:~:text=toggle%20caption,in%20the%20fall%20and%20thereafter.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">overturned <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em><\/a> in 2022. Easy, but how safe?<\/p>\n<p>Pro-life advocates oppose mifepristone as another form of abortion, as they should. But critics also object to it being delivered by mail to patients who may not read instructions or consult a clinician, and end up bleeding on the bathroom floor like Lynn.<\/p>\n<p>While still being widely provided, there are two regulatory changes that President Donald J. Trump\u2019s FDA must address to protect women and girls using mifepristone. One, adverse effects should be documented as adverse effects, and not \u201cmiscarriage.\u201d Secondly, it should <em>only<\/em> be administered and monitored by medical personnel.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>In 2016, during Barack Obama\u2019s presidency, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/media\/164649\/download\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">FDA Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy<\/a> (REMS) required administration by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/pharmacies-face-lawsuits-and-protests-if-they-dispense-abortion-pills\/\" title=\"Pharmacies face lawsuits and protests if they dispense ...s\">certified health care providers<\/a> but only required manufacturers to notify the FDA in case of a <em>death<\/em>. Massive hemorrhages need not apply.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/media\/164651\/download\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Biden-era REMS<\/a> updates added paperwork, but no safeguards. It asks patients to voluntarily report complications to their provider (the United States Post Office?) with no requirements to report adverse effects to the FDA. It also holds that adverse events can be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/media\/112118\/download#:~:text=Page%202,hospitalized%20category%20in%20Table%202.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201creclassified,\u201d<\/a> meaning a severe reaction to mifepristone \u2014 whether for abortion or in lieu of traditional D&#038;C for miscarriage \u2014 can be categorized as a miscarriage.<\/p>\n<p>How many women and girls have suffered severe complications? No one knows.<\/p>\n<p>The secrecy is so profound it led the nonprofit organization <a href=\"https:\/\/advancingamericanfreedom.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Advancing American Freedom<\/a> to file a<a href=\"https:\/\/advancingamericanfreedom.com\/aaf-foundation-files-foia-lawsuit-against-hhs-on-mifepristone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Freedom of Information lawsuit<\/a> against FDA demanding its release of all related communications and information on mifepristone. A <a href=\"https:\/\/media.eppc.org\/2025\/04\/25-04-The-Abortion-Pill-Harms-Women.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">detailed analysis<\/a> of abortion pill-related claims last year by the <a href=\"https:\/\/eppc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ethics and Public Policy Center<\/a> revealed that an appalling one in 10 women experiences adverse effects from the abortion pill. That is an unacceptable government-sanctioned health risk. Why hasn\u2019t the FDA <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/05\/13\/as-makary-steps-down-pro-lifers-await-movement-from-trump-fda-on-abortion-drugs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">completed its review<\/a> of this data?<\/p>\n<p>Lynn\u2019s husband and her best friend were there to help her through the aftereffects of the pill. They likely saved her life. But imagine another scenario.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>You\u2019re 14 years old, discover you are pregnant, and are terrified to tell your parents. You\u2019re still a kid, with kid-level discernment and medical knowledge. After lying about your age online, mifepristone comes in the mail. You bleed so badly that you pass out on your bathroom floor. You\u2019ve done all of this in secrecy with no one to help you.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Early in his tenure Makary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/show\/what-the-new-fda-commissioner-says-about-possible-restrictions-on-abortion-medication\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">noted he had \u201cno plans to take action\u201d<\/a> on the abortion pill. Well, if it wasn\u2019t his job, whose was it? It took Lynn nearly a year to physically recover. She was off work for months and had several secondary health problems, particularly with her kidneys and liver, and normalizing her hemoglobin.<\/p>\n<p>Emotionally, she was devastated and grieving. She told me, \u201cI was so sick and so out of it for so long it took a while before I remembered to grieve for my baby. When it hit, it hit hard.
