They also amplified stories and <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/10\/30\/woman-coerced-into-abortion-asks-fda-to-stop-shielding-abusers-and-their-drug-dealers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lawsuits<\/a> demonstrating how the prevalence of mail-order mifepristone paved the way for <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/10\/28\/lax-abortion-pill-rules-make-already-vulnerable-women-more-susceptible-to-harm-and-abuse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">abuse and harm<\/a> to women who wanted to keep their pregnancies.<\/p>\n<p>Even in the face of polling showing a <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/10\/28\/trumps-trusted-pollster-even-pro-aborts-say-mifepristone-is-dangerous-and-needs-fda-regulation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">majority of likely voters<\/a> want the FDA to protect women from the dangers of abortion pills, the FDA declined to act or offer a measurable update on its abortion drug evaluation.<\/p>\n<p>Frustration further mounted when the FDA <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/10\/02\/after-promising-review-of-deadly-abortion-pill-fda-greenlights-a-copycat-version\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">approved<\/a> a generic version of the abortion pill for sale in October 2025. Despite the fact that the off-brand abortion drug sat unapproved for 1,207 days under the Biden administration and another 253 days under Trump, HHS claimed to The Federalist that it was required \u201cby law\u201d to approve the application for distribution. <\/p>\n<p>By then, groups such as <a href=\"https:\/\/sbaprolife.org\/newsroom\/press-releases\/sba-pro-life-america-fire-makary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SBA List Pro-Life America<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/LilaGraceRose\/status\/1998429557909565477\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Live Action\u2019s Lila Rose<\/a> were fed up. Relying on <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/i6ZcA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">anonymously-sourced<\/a> claims that Makary was slow-walking the mifepristone review he previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2025\/12\/09\/exclusive-makary-responds-report-saying-he-slow-walked-abortion-pill-safety-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">confirmed<\/a> was underway, pro-lifers began calling for the FDA chief\u2019s firing in December 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Those calls only intensified after the FDA <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/01\/29\/fda-wants-pause-on-landmark-abortion-pill-suit-pro-lifers-say-it-will-cost-lives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">noted in its January 2026 response to a landmark abortion pill challenge out of Louisiana<\/a> that would not do anything about mifepristone until the conclusion of its official abortion drug evaluation. <\/p>\n<p>Makary\u2019s exit might not be solely due to his mishandling of the mifepristone issue. Trump was reportedly frustrated with the FDA head\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/politics\/policy\/trump-pressures-fda-commissioner-to-approve-flavored-vapes-9dad81ee?st=jCMo1n&#038;reflink=desktopwebshare_permalink\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">resistance to approving flavored vapes<\/a> and pharmaceutical companies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2026\/05\/12\/nx-s1-5819722\/fda-commissioner-makary-resigns\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">disliked Makary\u2019s regulatory style<\/a>.
