The issue stems from the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in *Louisiana v. Callais*, which found that congressional districts drawn primarily based on race are unconstitutional-calling into question the constitutionality of Thompson’s district.

The article says Mississippi may convene a special redistricting session and could revisit a 2022 map that redistributed state House and senate districts and also all four U.S. House districts. It also notes that the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals vacated a lower-court decision that had held the 2022 map violated the Voting Rights Act, clearing the way for litigation and possible redrawing.

It describes Thompson’s district (Mississippi’s 2nd) as running along much of the western side of the state and potentially being reshaped into more compact districts. The piece further argues that such changes woudl place Democrats-who it claims have long benefited from gerrymandering-into a more competitive electoral environment.

Democratic Rep.
