President Trump would be giving up a lot just to get President Xi\u2019s help in resolving something he can do on his own. He\u2019s not going to give up something as important as our long-standing relationship with Taiwan and our stance of ambiguity, calculated ambiguity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lyle Goldstein, the director of Defense Priorities\u2019 Asia Program, disputed Trump\u2019s solid footing regarding Iran but added that Chinese officials doubt they can move Trump on Taiwan policy, even if \u201che\u2019s so inconsistent and prone to follow the last piece of advice that he got.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Chinese know it, of course,\u201d he told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cHope for major movement there probably doesn\u2019t exist in Beijing, so my guess would be that their approach is to kind of just hope for a reiteration of the [former President Joe] Biden-era formula of not supporting Taiwan independence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/4528130\/trump-strait-hormuz-blockade-unlikely-draw-china-into-iran-war\/\"><strong>TRUMP\u2019S HORMUZ BLOCKADE UNLIKELY TO DRAW CHINA INTO IRAN CONFLICT<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The United States has provided Taiwan defense assistance for the better part of the past 50 years, and Goldstein believes China will not \u201cgo to the mat\u201d on pressuring Trump to halt arms sales.<\/p>\n<p>Goldstein did suggest one possible exception to that rule. He told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em> that Xi may seek \u201csome kind of gentleman\u2019s agreement\u201d with Trump to exclude ATACMS and other \u201cnew missile systems\u201d from future weapons transfers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that has the Chinese a bit lathered up, the idea that Taiwan would have that kind of offensive capability,\u201d he told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>One senior Trump administration official told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em> that the concerns from certain members of Congress, including some Republicans, over Taiwan are \u201cnothing more than feckless hand-wringing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPresident Trump has demonstrated that he\u2019s dedicated to ensuring peace across the globe,\u201d that person said. \u201cYes, he\u2019s stated that he would rather work with China than against it \u2014\u00a0and I\u2019d argue the trade dialogue speaks to that \u2014 but China simply won\u2019t be allowed to invade Taiwan on his watch. Full stop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump has certainly evolved his own rhetoric, compared to his first term, when discussing America\u2019s most powerful frenemy.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, Trump told reporters in the Oval Office that Taiwan will almost certainly be discussed during the summit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019ll bring up Taiwan, I think, more than I will,\u201d the president said, adding that he expected Xi to raise the topic of U.S. arms sales to the island.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/4562834\/trump-seriously-considering-venezuela-51st-state\/\"><strong>TRUMP SAYS HE\u2019S \u2018SERIOUSLY CONSIDERING\u2019 MAKING VENEZUELA THE 51ST STATE<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Trump also referred to Xi as a \u201cgentleman\u201d who \u201cloves his country\u201d but borrowed language he frequently uses to characterize Russia\u2019s 2022 invasion of Ukraine to send something of a warning on Taiwan to his Chinese counterpart.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you have the right president, I don\u2019t think it\u2019ll happen,\u201d he said. \u201cI think we\u2019ll be fine. I have a very good relationship with President Xi.
