Since gas prices fell to <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/4414350\/gas-prices-national-average-falls-to-2-79-per-gallon-for-first-time-in-nearly-five-years\/\">$2.79 per gallon<\/a> on Jan. 12, a five-year low, fuel costs have gradually risen, as mentioned above. Initially, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/gas-prices-national-average-up-to-4-14-per-gallon\/\" title=\"...: ... up to .14 per gallon\">winter weather nationwide<\/a> was blamed for rising fuel costs, as snowstorms in January and February disrupted oil refinery operations and production. However, fuel prices began to soar after the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/iran\/\">Iran<\/a> war began.<\/p>\n<p>During the first week of March, a gallon of regular gas <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/4476417\/gas-prices-costs-creep-up-close-to-3-per-gallon-to-begin-march\/\">increased to $2.98<\/a>. By March 31, the national average price of regular gas <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/4510200\/gas-prices-over-4-per-gallon-most-expensive-since-2022\/\">had risen to $4.02 per gallon<\/a>. Gas prices had previously reached a 2026 high of <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/gasprices.aaa.com\/news\/\">$4.16 per gallon on April 9<\/a>. As a result, soaring fuel costs have been a frequent topic of discussion, with Democrats blaming President Donald Trump\u2019s choice to go to war with Iran as the <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >primary reason gas prices<\/a> are high. <\/p>\n<p>Tuesday\u2019s national average gas pricing decrease came after President Donald <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/energy-and-environment\/4562887\/trump-calls-pause-federal-gas-tax-ease-prices-pump\/\">Trump suggested suspending the federal gas tax<\/a> \u201cfor a period of time.\u201d Trump touted the suggestion during an interview on Monday. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s a great idea,\u201d Trump <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-interview-suspending-gas-tax-iran-war\/\">said<\/a> about the temporary reprieve from the tax. \u201cYup, we\u2019re going to take off the gas tax for a period of time, and when gas goes down, we\u2019ll let it phase back in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The president does not have the authority to suspend the gas tax, and any such action would require congressional approval, despite Trump\u2019s remarks. It would also be a reduction of, at most, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/05\/11\/business\/federal-gas-tax-suspension-trump\">18.4 cents per gallon<\/a>, as that is the cost of the tax. <\/p>\n<p>Despite the turbulence at the pumps over the last month, gas prices in the country tend to vary by region. Currently, the most expensive gas prices in the nation are located in the western U.S., while the cheapest gas prices are found in states in the Gulf region. <\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/energy-and-environment\/4562887\/trump-calls-pause-federal-gas-tax-ease-prices-pump\/\"><strong>TRUMP CALLS TO PAUSE FEDERAL GAS TAX IN BID TO EASE PRICES AT THE PUMP<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>California has the most expensive gas prices in the country at $6.153 per gallon. This is followed by Washington state at $5.766 per gallon. Next is Hawaii, with a statewide average price of $5.64 per gallon, and then Oregon, with an average price of $5.33 per gallon. Alaska rounds out the top five states with the highest gas prices in the nation, with an average price of $5.262 per gallon. <\/p>\n<p>Conversely, Oklahoma remains the state with the lowest gas prices in the country at $3.943 per gallon. After its very brief reign last week of being the state with the lowest gas prices in the country, Mississippi is next at $3.984 per gallon. This is followed by Louisiana at $3.998 per gallon and Texas at $4.011 per gallon.
