This came after the Court\u2019s late April decision in *Louisiana v. Callais*, which raised the standard for proving intentional racial discrimination in redistricting.<\/p>\n<p>The shift is likely to help republicans flip at least one of Alabama\u2019s two Democratic-held seats for the 2026 election by reverting to a 2023 map that includes one black-majority district. Justice Sonia Sotomayor penned a dissenting opinion, joined by Justices Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson, who wrote that the high court\u2019s decision was \u201cinappropriate and will cause only confusion as Alabamians begin to vote in the elections scheduled for next week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Court today unceremoniously discards the District Court\u2019s meticulously documented and supported discriminatory-intent finding and careful remedial order without any sound basis for doing so and without regard for the confusion that will surely ensue,\u201d Sotomayor wrote, while claiming the <em>Callais<\/em> decision does not change the lower court\u2019s finding of racially discriminatory intent behind the 2023 map.<\/p>\n<p>The Supreme Court\u2019s ruling on Alabama\u2019s redistricting effort comes as various GOP-led states, including Louisiana, Florida, and Tennessee, have rushed to redraw their congressional maps after the high court\u2019s April 29 ruling in <em>Callais<\/em> rewrote the rules on what is needed to prove racial gerrymandering.
