A former employee, April Curley, filed a lawsuit in 2022 on behalf of others, claiming Google steered Black workers into lower-level and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/women-make-20-less-than-men-in-bidens-white-house-despite-his-pledge-to-address-the-issue\/\" title=\"Despite Biden&#039;s promise to tackle the issue, women in his White House still earn 20% less than men.\">lower-paid roles<\/a> and created hostile conditions for those who spoke out; the case later became a class action.<\/p>\n<p>The settlement was announced in May 2025 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/recreational-marijuana-bill-clears-new-mexico-legislature\/\" title=\"Recreational marijuana bill clears New Mexico Legislature\">received final approval<\/a> in the current week. Google said it disagrees with the allegations and remains committed to paying,hiring,and leveling employees consistently. Civil rights attorney Ben Crump said the agreement is meant to hold Google accountable and address discrimination.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit also referenced prior complaints by Black staff members, including AI scholar Timnit Gebru, who said she was pushed out after a dispute about research on risks from emerging AI. According to the 2022 claims, Google used <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/scholastic-pulls-captain-underpants-spinoff-author-apologizes-over-passive-racism-harmful-to-asian-americans\/\" title=\"Scholastic Pulls \u2018Captain Underpants\u2019 Spinoff, Author Apologizes Over \u2018Passive Racism\u2019 \u2018Harmful\u2019 To Asian-Americans\">harmful racial stereotypes<\/a> during recruitment and interview processes, undermined candidates, and hired some into roles with fewer advancement opportunities. The suit claimed the company steered them into lower-level and lower-paid jobs and subjected them to a hostile work environment if they speak out. Other former Google workers also joined the suit, which later received class action status.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis case is about accountability, plain and simple,\u201d said civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who represented the plaintiffs, in a statement. \u201cFor far too long, Black employees in the tech industry have faced barriers that limit opportunity. This settlement is a significant step toward holding one of the world\u2019s most powerful companies accountable and making clear that discriminatory practices cannot and will not be tolerated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The settlement was announced in May 2025 and granted final approval this week. Google said when the settlement was reached that it strongly disagrees with the allegations that it treated anyone improperly and remains \u201ccommitted to paying, hiring, and leveling all employees consistently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit, echoed years of complaints from Black employees at the company. That includes <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/business-apple-inc-artificial-intelligence-00c1dab0a727456df9e5ef9c6160c792\">prominent artificial intelligence scholar Timnit Gebru<\/a>, who said she was pushed out in 2020 after a dispute over a research paper examining the societal dangers of an emerging branch of artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>The 2022 lawsuit claimed that Mountain View, California-based Google viewed Black job candidates \u201cthrough harmful racial stereotypes\u201d and claimed that hiring managers deemed Black candidates \u201cnot \u2018Googly\u2019 enough, a plain dog whistle for race discrimination.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition, according to the suit, interviewers \u201chazed\u201d and undermined Black candidates and hired Black candidates into lower-paying and lower-level roles with less <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >advancement potential based<\/a> on their race and racial stereotypes.<\/p>\n<p>The settlement, which does not constitute admission of liability by Google, also includes a commitment to pay equity analyses, pay transparency measures, and limits on mandatory arbitration for employment-related disputes through at least August 2026, according to Crump.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: italic;\">The Western Journal has not reviewed this Associated Press story prior to publication.
