Congress is also expected to face another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/mcconnell-says-republicans-wont-help-democrats-pay-for-socialist-shopping-list-in-debt-ceiling-fight\/\" title=\"McConnell Says Republicans Won\u2019t Help Democrats Pay For \u2018Socialist Shopping List\u2019 In Debt Ceiling Fight\">debt ceiling fight<\/a> by mid-2027, potentially forcing Trump and Jeffries into high-stakes negotiations over spending and fiscal policy.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the stakes, Trump and Jeffries have publicly met in person only once.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a very contentious thing \u2014 a relationship in a deeply divided country where two parties are at each other\u2019s throats,\u201d New York Republican strategist Jay Townsend told the <em>Washington Examiner.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Jeffries and the president have only occasionally crossed paths publicly, such as Trump\u2019s joint addresses to Congress and last year\u2019s inauguration.<\/p>\n<p>The pair\u2019s one in-person meeting came last year during negotiations to avert a government shutdown in September. The meeting was fruitless, with both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-admin-praises-ukraine-for-using-us-weapons-in-counteroffensive\/\" title=\"Biden admin. praises Ukraine for using US weapons in counteroffensive\">sides pointing fingers<\/a> at each other for the failure to reach a deal.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, Jeffries <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2025\/09\/29\/trump-democrats-white-house-meeting-shutdown-schumer-jeffries\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2025\/09\/29\/trump-democrats-white-house-meeting-shutdown-schumer-jeffries\">told<\/a> reporters that \u201csignificant differences\u201d remained, while Vice President JD Vance said \u201cthe American people are going to suffer because these guys won\u2019t do the right thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still, while that meeting failed to yield a deal, Townsend said if Democrats take control of the House, Trump and Jeffries will \u201chave a government to run, and they\u2019re going to have to cooperate on some things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrump\u2019s going to want certain things that requires Democratic votes, and at some point he\u2019s got to work with Jeffries, or whoever is there,\u201d Townsend continued.<\/p>\n<p>New York-based Democratic strategist Jon Reinish told the <em>Washington Examiner <\/em>that Jeffries is a \u201cscrappy fighter from Brooklyn, something like that is not going to rattle his cool.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIronically, the more that Trump attacks him, that confers power as an adversary on Jeffries, which is actually good politics for him,\u201d Reinish said.<\/p>\n<p>In some ways, the strained relationship between Trump and a top Democrat is par for the course. Trump also had a difficult relationship with Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) during his first term.
