She said her 2020 assault near the U.S. Capitol-where the attacker was arrested and jailed-was not reflected in the city\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/first-homicide-reported-in-13-days-in-trump-federalized-dc\/\" title=\"First homicide ... in 13 days in Trump-federalized DC\">reported crime data<\/a> because police told her they only count certain categories (such as first-degree assaults).  <\/p>\n<p>giaritelli argued that the larger issue became clear only after she examined how incidents were categorized and reported, and she said she has not fully seen the problem addressed despite ongoing investigation. Giaritelli said the scope of the issue became clear only after examining how incidents were categorized and reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/erick-erickson-the-man-who-willingly-crawled-onto-a-pyre-to-be-burned-alive-for-jesus\/\" title=\"Erick Erickson: The Man Who Willingly Crawled Onto a Pyre To Be Burned Alive for Jesus\">local authorities<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a federal law enforcement reporter, I had no idea how D.C. police were manipulating the stats to leave it out. I\u2019m still not counting the problem. The problem is just so big there\u2019s still so much work to be done,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/dcpoliceunion.lrisapps.com\/docs\/Press%20Release%202026%20-%20Results%20of%20Crime%20Stat%20Investigation.pdf\">statement released on May 5<\/a>, the D.C. police union said command staff was pressuring patrol commanders to downgrade serious and violent offenses, including assaults with dangerous weapons, robberies, burglaries, motor vehicle thefts, and other crimes, to create the appearance that crime was declining. <\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/magazine\/4504170\/cover-up-worse-than-the-crime-dc-stats\/\"><strong>MAGAZINE \u2014 THE COVER-UP IS WORSE THAN THE CRIME: ONE WOMAN\u2019S EXPERIENCE WITH DC PUBLIC SAFETY STATS<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s so systemic. D.C. police, I\u2019ve been trying to reach out to them and Mayor <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/muriel-bowser\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"2963\">Muriel Bowser<\/a> for nine months and haven\u2019t gotten any response \u2026 the way they treat crime victims is frankly deplorable, and so I decided if I can\u2019t get a hold of them and have a conversation, then all of us are going to go forth together, and so we\u2019ve created a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/change.org\">change.org<\/a> petition.
