Field after earlier overtaking john Paul Stevens. And on Thursday, he did it once more.<\/p>\n<p>The 77-year-old Thomas hit a major milestone by becoming the second-longest serving justice in U.S. history. The Georgia native surpassed Justice Stephen J. Field for the record on Thursday, which came several days after overtaking Justice John Paul Stevens as the third-longest serving justice.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas was sworn in on Oct. 23, 1991, and has served in his current position for more than 34 years. He would <a href=\"https:\/\/supremecourthistory.org\/scotus-scoops\/clarence-thomas-poised-to-become-the-second-longest-serving-justice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">surpass<\/a> Justice William O. Douglas as the longest-serving justice should he continue to serve until May 2028.<\/p>\n<p>Thursday\u2019s record marks a significant achievement for Thomas, whose life story is as remarkable as his career on the nation\u2019s highest court.<\/p>\n<p>The Bush 41 appointee was born into poverty in Pin Point, Georgia, at the height of segregation. As a young boy, his mother sent him and his brother to live in Savannah with their grandparents \u2014 both of whom would be instrumental in shaping the man America knows today. <\/p>\n<p>While raised in the Catholic Church, Thomas would go on to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicherald.com\/article\/national\/justice-thomas-in-notre-dame-lecture-discusses-faith-modern-views\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fall away<\/a> from his upbringing and Christian beliefs in early adulthood. Left scarred by the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., he turned to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/mcdaniel-big-tech-suppressed-the-truth-about-covid-19\/\" title=\"McDaniel: Big Tech Suppressed The Truth About COVID-19\u00a0\">left-wing orthodoxy<\/a> and became a radical throughout his college years. It was only after returning from an unruly riot at Harvard Square in 1970 did he ask God to \u201ctake hate\u201d out of his heart and begin his long \u201ccrawl\u201d back to the faith. <\/p>\n<p>In the years that followed, Thomas would <a href=\"https:\/\/supreme.justia.com\/justices\/clarence-thomas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">work<\/a> under Republican Jack Danforth during the latter\u2019s time as Missouri attorney general and later as a U.S. senator. The Georgia native was ultimately tapped to serve as the assistant secretary for Civil Rights at the Department of Education, where he briefly worked before being appointed chair of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. President George H.W. Bush later appointed Thomas to the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, where he served one year before being nominated to SCOTUS in 1991.<\/p>\n<p>Since arriving at the Supreme Court, Thomas has been instrumental in furthering an originalist approach to constitutional interpretation. That is, interpreting the Constitution as it was written at the time of its adoption and declining to \u201clegislate from the bench\u201d as past Supreme Courts have done (see <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oyez.org\/cases\/1971\/70-18\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Roe v. Wade<\/a><\/em>). <\/p>\n<p>Thomas\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/supreme.justia.com\/cases\/federal\/us\/521\/898\/#tab-opinion-1960202\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">concurrence<\/a> in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oyez.org\/cases\/1996\/95-1478\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Printz v. United States<\/a><\/em>  (1997) in defense of Americans\u2019 Second Amendment freedoms is stark example of how his jurisprudence set the stage for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/justice-scalia-is-still-shaping-bombshell-scotus-rulings-years-after-his-death\/\" title=\"Scalia Is Still Shaping SCOTUS Rulings Years After His Death\">future originalist decisions<\/a>. The reasoning he put forward in <em>Printz<\/em> was arguably foundational to the Supreme Court\u2019s recognition of a personal right to \u201ckeep and bear arms\u201d in its 2008 <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oyez.org\/cases\/2007\/07-290\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">D.C. v. Heller<\/a><\/em>  decision. The Bush 41 appointee got the chance to further underscore this right several years later in his majority opinion in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oyez.org\/cases\/2021\/20-843\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NYSRPA v. Bruen<\/a><\/em>  (2022), in which the court upheld Americans\u2019 right to carry firearms outside the home for purposes of self-defense.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe constitutional right to bear arms in public for self-defense is not \u2018a second-class right, subject to an entirely different body of rules than the other Bill of Rights guarantees,&#8217;\u201d Thomas <a href=\"https:\/\/supreme.justia.com\/cases\/federal\/us\/597\/20-843\/#tab-opinion-4600259\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a> for the court. \u201cWe know of no other constitutional right that an individual may exercise only after demonstrating to government officers some special need. That is not how the First Amendment works when it comes to unpopular speech or the free exercise of religion. It is not how the Sixth Amendment works when it comes to a defendant\u2019s right to confront the witnesses against him. And it is not how the Second Amendment works when it comes to public carry for self-defense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The justice also authored notable opinions in the Supreme Court\u2019s recent <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oyez.org\/cases\/2022\/20-1199\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SFFA v. Harvard<\/a><\/em>  (2023) decision that affirmative action policies are unconstitutional; the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oyez.org\/cases\/2021\/19-1392\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dobbs v. Jackson Women\u2019s Health Organization<\/a><\/em>  (2022) decision overturning <em>Roe<\/em>; and the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oyez.org\/cases\/2024\/23-477\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">U.S. v. Skrmetti<\/a><\/em>  (2025) <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >decision upholding laws protecting minors<\/a> from \u201ctrans\u201d-obsessed weirdos. <\/p>\n<p>And while his incredible intellect and writing have become some of Thomas\u2019 most defining qualities, they are but a few of the many reasons millions of Americans have come to adore him.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8T8EAC1tKig\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">infectious laugh<\/a> and light-hearted persona, the man is widely known for his kindness and compassion to those around him. Even his liberal colleague Justice Sonia Sotomayor previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/corner\/sotomayor-on-thomas-the-one-justice-in-the-building-that-literally-knows-every-employees-name\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">praised him<\/a> for being \u201cthe one justice in the building that literally knows every employee\u2019s name,\u201d and who \u201cnot only \u2026 know[s] their names, he remembers their families\u2019 names and histories.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>[READ:[READ:<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/06\/23\/here-are-10-great-clarence-thomas-quotes-to-commemorate-his-77th-birthday\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Here Are 10 Great Clarence Thomas Quotes To Commemorate His 77th Birthday<\/a>]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But perhaps most admirable of all is Thomas\u2019 unflinching courage in the face of dishonest smear campaigns designed to destroy him and those in his orbit. Americans not only witnessed this bravery during his <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/10\/16\/bombshell-audio-biden-privately-praised-clarence-thomas-character-while-claiming-to-believe-anita-hills-smears\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gruesome 1991 Senate confirmation<\/a>, but in the years since, in which he has never wavered when it comes to doing the right thing. <\/p>\n<p>The justice most recently displayed this fortitude during a <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/04\/16\/clarence-thomas-celebrate-america-250-by-doing-something-to-save-the-country\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">speech<\/a> at the University of Texas. <\/p>\n<p>Addressing attendees, Thomas highlighted how many people in Washington, D.C. often pay \u201clip service\u201d to America\u2019s founding principles, only to then buckle when the going gets tough. More importantly, however, he encouraged listeners to reject such cowardice and be bold when faced with adversity in their own lives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChannel the courage of the men who faced down a king and signed [the Declaration], or a president who led the nation in a civil war rather than permit this house to be divided by the great contradiction of slavery,\u201d Thomas said. \u201cTake increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure, and with a firm reliance on the protection of divine providence, let us mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If readers take anything from this man\u2019s extraordinary life and accomplishments, it\u2019s that praise and glorification from the \u201cpopular\u201d crowd are no substitutes for honor and decency; that to do what is right when faced with unrelenting pressure not to is worth it; and that, with God, traversing the storms of life is possible. <\/p>\n<p>Justice Thomas has embodied and lived these principles throughout his life and record-setting career.
