Speaking at a George W. Bush Presidential Center event, she said critics and consumers of news should engage with the Court more accurately, noting that media outlets may \u201cbait and switch\u201d by highlighting high-profile cases in advance and then abandoning the storyline when rulings don\u2019t fit the expected ideological split.<\/p>\n<p>Barrett also lamented limited Supreme court literacy in popular culture, including an anecdote about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/yale-law-students-said-a-top-journal-was-racist-admissions-data-suggest-otherwise\/\" title=\"Yale ... Criticism of the court doesn\u2019t bother me. Criticism of the court\u2019s decisions doesn\u2019t bother me because I think people should be paying attention, and they should be engaged,\u201d she said, voicing approval for popular discussion around Supreme Court rulings.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-paywall\">\n<p>\u201cBut the thing about the partisan breakdown is that\u2019s just not true, and those same numbers have continued to play out over the ensuing years. But that is not the narrative that\u2019s portrayed in the media,\u201d Barrett said.<\/p>\n<p>As part of this supposed inaccurate portrayal, Barrett criticized the \u201cbait and switch\u201d repeatedly played out in some media, where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/why-are-so-many-kids-rejecting-christianity-look-at-their-parents\/\" title=\"Why Are So Many Kids Rejecting Christianity? Look At Their Parents\">major court cases<\/a> are hyped up beforehand, then dropped if the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/some-election-managers-ignore-wisconsin-supreme-courts-ruling-on-absentee-ballots\/\" title=\"Some Election Managers Ignore Wisconsin ......s Ruling on Absentee Ballots\">ruling isn\u2019<\/a>t the ideological split that was predicted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have this phenomenon where at the beginning of the term, the media will say, \u2018Here are the cases to watch,\u2019 and they\u2019ll list a couple big cases. And then if one of those big cases turns out to be unanimous, or turns out to be 7-2, or to have a scramble, all of a sudden it falls out of the narrative,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think you have to read very critically about the court. I think it gets maybe more clicks or more people worked up if the court is portrayed that way, but it\u2019s just not consistent with the data,\u201d Barrett continued.<\/p>\n<p>She bemoaned a lack of Supreme Court literacy in popular culture and related a time when her law students voiced strong opinions on different Supreme Court cases, but when pressed, almost none had actually read the opinions.<\/p>\n<p>When asked for a concluding message for the night, Barrett stressed the importance of the Supreme Court in protecting the rule of law, arguing that its role is much deeper than just the results of individual cases.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/supreme-court\/4552880\/gorsuch-supreme-court-leaks-dobbs-shadow-docket\/\" type=\"post\" id=\"4552880\">GORSUCH STRESSES \u2018CANDID CONVERSATIONS\u2019 AMONG JUSTICES AFTER SUPREME COURT LEAKS<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes protecting the rule of law is not about a result. It\u2019s often that\u2019s usually the least important thing in protecting the rule of law because it is about following the reasoning where it goes. And so I would encourage you to see the court as an institution that\u2019s separate from the political branches, that does a different kind of work,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd it\u2019s not to say that the court is perfect or that it always gets it right, but that it\u2019s a different kind of thing that\u2019s not just about raw politics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Supreme Court has been under sustained fire from the Democratic Party since securing a conservative majority in 2020.
